Hanstholm

Fisken in Hanstholm, in the North Denmark region, is a well-known spot near the fish factory and the harbor. It is an authentic place in Cold Hawaii with a fishing village vibe.

The beach is small and covered with stones, surrounded by the long breakwater that protects the area. Locals enjoy this spot for its excellent waves when the conditions are right.

You can park directly in front of the factory or the wind turbines, and access is via small roads after the steel bridge.

The Fisken spot works well with NW winds that are side-shore relative to the east-facing beach, creating perfect wave conditions. The long pier acts as a natural breakwater, offering a flat to chop protected area in the center even in strong wind, while powerful wave sets form on the sides with ocean swell and sustained wind.

Launching is technical on the rocky and stony beach, with a small launch/landing area: you need to aim precisely to avoid obstacles. Navigation outside the protected area for medium waves, but stay cautious near the harbor and wind turbines. At high tide, the launch space increases slightly, but the shorebreak can be violent with large swell.

Local peculiarity: the breakwater mitigates currents, but strong onshore wind from the east brings massive shorebreak. Ideal for jumps and advanced wave riding in the northwest area of the spot.

Vent ideal
NWdominant
N
NE

Ideal conditions are a NW to W wind of 20-30 knots, side-shore, with moderate swell for perfect waves and a flat area in the center. Avoid overly onshore east winds that make the spot dangerous.

État de la mer

The water state varies from protected flat in the center due to the pier, to powerful medium waves on the edges with strong wind and swell. Water quality is not optimal near the fish factory.

Sharp shells litter the bottom, making falls uncomfortable.

Courants marins

Currents are generally mitigated by the large breakwater of the harbor, which effectively protects the bay. However, in the case of a strong ocean swell, lateral currents can form near the ends of the pier.

Tides have little influence on the spot, but check the schedules to avoid peak currents offshore.

Taille de kite recommandée

Opt for sizes 9 to 12 m² in typical strong northern wind conditions, dropping to 7-9 m² in sustained wind gusts. Size up for lighter sessions in summer.

Météo & vent

The wind regime is dominated by Atlantic depressions, with frequent strong NW and W winds that can reach high speeds in winter. No specific local name, but this is the Cold Hawaii area known for its consistent and powerful wind.

Ideal conditions occur with cross-shore wind from the northwest, generating world-class waves.

Climat

The climate around Hanstholm is cold oceanic, typical of the North Sea, with cool temperatures year-round. Summers are mild around 15-20°C, while winters drop to 0-5°C, making a full suit essential.

Windy seasons extend throughout the year, with months like October to March often being the busiest for storms.

Profondeur

The depth quickly becomes significant beyond the protected area, with a sandy bottom mixed with rocks and sharp shells. You can stand only in the first few meters of the narrow beach.

Température de l’eau

Water temperatures are cool: 8-12°C in summer, dropping to 4-8°C in winter. A 5/4 mm wetsuit or thicker is mandatory year-round.
