Why Morocco is Europe's top kite destination
In fifteen years, Morocco has become the most consistent kite destination between Europe and Africa. Three regions dominate. Dakhla, in Western Sahara, with its legendary 40-km lagoon framed by dunes, NE trade-wind 20-30 knots, water 20-24°C, and a simple protocol: flat kiting on the lagoon, ocean option for surf-kite. Essaouira, facing the Atlantic, wave capital with powerful thermal wind, for advanced riders who want to ride waves. And the Casa-Rabat-Bouznika-Oualidia coast, a weekend destination still under the radar. What makes Morocco unique: proximity (3h flight from Europe), season length (April to October for Dakhla and Essaouira, spring-summer for Bouznika), cost (below European prices), and above all variety — few places in the world let you flat-kite a desert lagoon in the morning and surf-kite an Atlantic wave 300 km away in the afternoon. The Moroccan scene is mature: Dakhla now hosts about twenty premium all-inclusive kite camps, Essaouira has its historic schools, and the famous Moroccan hospitality — mint tea, tagines after a session, sunset desert rides — is integral to the trip.

- Exceptional scenery: desert, dunes, Saharan colours, authentic cultural encounters.
Kite season in Morocco — when to go
In Dakhla, wind blows year-round, peaking April to October when NE trades deliver 20-30 knots 25 days per month. June-July-August are the strongest (sometimes 30-35 knots), April and October offer milder conditions and fewer people. In Essaouira, the trade-wind season follows the same rhythm but with even stronger wind in summer (July-August can exceed 35 knots, advanced only). Winter (December-February) sees wind drop in Dakhla but it remains kitable with cooler water (18-20°C, 3/2 mm recommended). The Casa-Rabat coast is more seasonal: May to September for steady thermal wind.
