chopThe spot works ideally with a NW or WNW wind, coming in side-on relative to the north-facing beach, creating excellent average waves and a flat area protected by the long pier. The launch is on a small stone beach, so plan to wear shoes to avoid sharp shells and rocks.
The navigation area is small, with limited take-off/landing; avoid getting close to the wind turbines at the beach. With good ocean swell and strong wind, nice sets can be found, but the water remains choppy outside the sheltered area. Tides have little influence, it works at all hours.
Local peculiarity: the frontal wind from Atlantic depressions brings strength year-round, but the best sessions require sustained wind and swell for the waves to form well behind the pier.
Ideal conditions are a 12-25 knot NW wind, with NE swell for stable waves. It works best in autumn-spring with depressions.
The water state is typically wave with average waves, especially excellent under NW wind and large swell. Behind the pier, there is a more flat area for jibes and tricks.
The water quality is not great due to the proximity of the port, and the bottom is mixed with sand and rocks.
Currents are generally weak along the beach but can intensify near the port and pier with the tides. Tides are moderate, with no major impact on navigability.
Opt for sizes 9 to 12m² in medium wind, and 7 to 9m² when it picks up with depressions.
The wind regime is dominated by Atlantic depressions bringing frontal NW or WNW winds, with variable but often sustained forces. The best months are March, April, May, September, October, November, when the wind is most reliable.
In summer, the winds are lighter, but autumn and spring offer powerful sessions with any possible strength.
The climate in Hanstholm is cool oceanic, with average temperatures from 5 to 15°C depending on the seasons. Winters are mild but windy, while summers remain cool with little heat.
The Thy National Park region offers consistent conditions thanks to the winds from the North Sea, ideal for kitesurfing from March to November.
The depth quickly becomes significant with a mixed sand and rocks bottom. Foot possible near the shore at high tide, but quickly deep.
Water temperatures range from 5-8°C in winter to 12-16°C in summer. A 5/4mm wetsuit is essential year-round.
