Øsløs

Amtoft Vig Kitespot, on the north shore of the Limfjord in Øsløs in northern Denmark, is a small quiet spot favored by riders for its shallow water and easy access from the harbor. There is a beautiful sandy bay to the east of the pier, with free parking and even a freshwater hose to rinse off the gear.

The spot is well-suited for beginners thanks to its stable foot zone, and it is perfect for freestyle, foiling, or just warming up. Close to a small supermarket, it is the ideal place to spend a few days without complicating life.

Located near Klitmøller, 35 minutes away, it offers a calm alternative to the more exposed spots of Cold Hawaii.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The spot works well with winds from west, south, and east, where the wind is side-shore or side-on relative to the south-facing beach. The navigation area extends on both sides of the harbor pier: to the east in the sandy bay with more foot, to the west via a small narrow beach near the shore.

Launching is done directly from the sandy or pebble beach to the right of the harbor, with good grass for takeoff and landing. The water is wide and protected by the Limfjord, so flat to light chop even with some strong wind, with no notable waves.

Tides have little impact in this inland fjord, but always check local times. Parking at the south pier, ample space to set up, and the spot is uncrowded off-season.

S

Ideal conditions are with side-shore winds from west to southeast, strength 15-25 knots for a flat and stable water surface.

Sea state

The water state is generally flat with some chop in strong winds, ideal for freestyle. The bay offers a large flat and shallow area.

Sea currents

Currents are weak in the protected Limfjord, but they can intensify near the harbor channel. Tides are moderate (low amplitude), with no major impact on navigation.

Recommended kite size

Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in typical conditions, smaller (7-9 m²) in strong winds, and larger (12-14 m²) in light winds.

Weather & wind

The wind regime is reliable due to the location in the Limfjord, with dominant west and northwest winds coming from Cold Hawaii. Wind strengths typically range from 15-30 knots, more stable in winter.

No specific local name, but the wind is often steady and thermal in summer.

Climate

The climate in northern Denmark is cool oceanic, with average temperatures of 5-10°C in winter and 15-20°C in summer. The seasons are distinct, but the wind is consistent year-round, making the spot usable for 12 months.

Bring a full wetsuit even in summer, as the water remains cold.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom, foot up to 50-100 m in the bay, then steep after.

Water temperature

Water temperatures range from 4-8°C in winter to 15-18°C in summer. A 5/3 mm wetsuit is the minimum required year-round.
