Why Mexico
Mexico offers three very different kite zones. La Ventana (Baja California) is the winter mecca from October to March: "El Norte" thermal wind of 20-30 knots near-daily, sand beach, kite-village atmosphere. El Cuyo and Isla Holbox in the Yucatán are the Caribbean spots: reliable NE trade winds from November to July, shallow flat water, turquoise sea, authentic Mexican vibe. Tulum further south offers a kite + yoga + cenotes + Mayan ruins mix. Mexico is especially popular with North American kiters (cheap direct flights from US/Canada) and is increasingly drawing Europeans for spot diversity, reasonable cost of living, and tacos-mezcal-mariachi culture.
Why Mexico
- Three kite regions (Baja, Yucatán, Pacific) = terrain choice by month.
- La Ventana: powerful thermal wind, iconic winter spot.
- El Cuyo, Holbox: shallow flat, low crowd.
- Northern winter ideal to escape European winter.
- Affordable for US, reasonable for Europe.
Kite season in Mexico — when to go
Depends on region. La Ventana: November-March (peak December-February, El Norte wind 20-30 kts). El Cuyo/Holbox: November-July (NE trades, peak February-June). Tulum: March-August. Yucatán is avoided August-October (hurricanes). Best multi-region month: March-April.
