Fakir is a kitesurf spot in Hanstholm, in the North Denmark region. Located west of the long pier of the harbor, it offers an authentic setting with the atmosphere of a fishing town and a view of the ocean.
It is a favored spot for riders due to its waves organized by the breakwater and its potential for windsurfing and wingfoiling. Conditions vary with the wind, with protection offered by the breakwaters.
The spot is discreet but delivers quality sessions when the wind aligns well with the swell.
The Fakir spot works particularly well with NE to E winds, which are side-shore relative to the northwest-facing beach, creating organized waves thanks to the breakwater that protects and sorts the waves. The launch area is small, on a narrow beach covered with stones, so it is necessary to choose a clear space away from the wind turbines and the pier. The riding area extends along the pier or on a sandbank between the breakwaters, with waves forming from the sea towards the beach, ideal for riding up to the sand.
In case of more west or south wind, the waves become cleaner but more gusty, and with a strength around 7 Beaufort or more, they break further out, making the spot technical. The water state is generally choppy with medium waves, influenced by the tide which slightly modifies access but not drastically the conditions. Be careful not to ride too close to the breakwaters where the waves turn. Launching is done directly from the narrow beach, with easy parking near the fish factory or the wind turbines.
Local feature: the waves can offer long rides along the new pier after the harbor extension, or on the south side of the Roshage pier, perfect for powerful maneuvers.
Ideal conditions are NE to E side-shore winds at 15-25 knots, with moderate swell for clean and long waves. Avoid winds too strong beyond 30 knots where it becomes expert only.
The water state offers excellent medium waves with NW wind, flat between the breakwaters thanks to the long mole, but choppy outside with ocean swell. Water quality is not optimal near the harbor, with possible sharp shells.
Currents are present mainly near the breakwaters and piers, amplified by the tide and strong winds. Caution is needed near the piers where they can be marked. Tides are moderate, with a range of about 0.5 to 1 m, influencing the spot little but altering beach access.
Opt for 9 to 11 m² sizes in moderate winds, and 7 to 9 m² when it picks up with waves. Adjust according to your weight and style.
The wind regime is dominated by NW and W winds, bringing consistent swell from the Atlantic. With NE to E winds, rare but valuable, the spot excels due to the protection of the coast. Wind strengths vary from 15-30 knots in the active season, with explosive sessions in winter.
The climate in Hanstholm is cold oceanic, with cool temperatures year-round, typical of the North Sea. Summers are mild around 15-20°C, while winters often drop below 0°C. Rainfall is frequent, especially in autumn and winter.
Depth quickly becomes significant beyond the wave zone, with a bottom mixing sand and rocks. Footing possible near the shore at high tide, but quickly deep.
Water temperatures range from 4-8°C in winter to 14-18°C in summer. A full wetsuit is essential year-round.
