Middles in Hanstholm, in the North Denmark Region, is a popular spot for riders due to its medium waves and generous space despite a narrow beach. The beach is long and stony, with many rocks to watch out for at the water's edge. It is easily accessible from Hanstholm by following road 26 to the small paths leading down to the sea.
It is a typical place in the Cold Hawaii region, known for its wild atmosphere and consistent conditions. Locals often ride here with NW winds, and the space allows for navigation without too much crowding. Parking is available at a red gate in the dunes to prepare the gear.

chopThe Middles spot works ideally with a NW side-on wind relative to the northwest-oriented beach, generating clean medium waves and regular conditions. The launch area is of medium size, on a narrow but long beach with plenty of space to take off and land the kite without stepping on each other. Watch out for many rocks on the sand, shoes are needed for walking and launching.
The navigation area extends along the beach, with water conditions ranging from light chop to solid waves depending on wind strength and ocean swell. No major tidal influence, but high waters facilitate entry. Avoid sailing too close to the wind turbines or the nearby harbor of Hanstholm. Wave sets are excellent with strong NW, and the space allows for long runs without forced returns.
Ideal conditions are a NW 20-30 knots wind, side-on, with moderate swell for clean waves. Avoid pure onshore which makes the water messy.
The water state offers medium waves with NW wind, clean and rideable up to the beach. In more onshore wind, it gets a bit choppy but remains fun. The bottom is sandy-stony, with sharp shells in places.
Currents are generally weak along the Middles beach but can strengthen near the harbor channel of Hanstholm. Tides are moderate in the North Sea, with no major impact on navigation here. Check the schedules to avoid outgoing flows.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12m² in medium wind, and 7 to 9m² when it exceeds 25 knots. Adjust according to your weight and wave level.
The wind regime is dominated by NW, often strong and steady due to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. The best months are March, April, May, September, October, and November, with sessions possible year-round. Typical strength of 15-30 knots in high season, gustier in winter.
The climate around Hanstholm is cool and windy year-round, typical of the northwest Jutland. Temperatures range from 5°C in winter to 18-20°C in summer, with wet seasons and frequent showers. The region is swept by Atlantic depressions that ensure constant wind.
The depth is gradual with a sandy and stony bottom. You can stand on the first 50-100m, then it quickly drops to deep water.
Water temperatures are cold, around 8-12°C from March to November, and 4-7°C in winter. A 5/4mm wetsuit is mandatory year-round.
