Grenå

Grenå Strand, on the east coast of Djursland in the Central Denmark Region, is a wide and open beach facing the Baltic Sea. It is a popular spot for local kiters due to its generous space and easy access from the town of Grenå.

The beach stretches for several kilometers with fine sand, ideal for launching. It has a calm atmosphere, away from the crowds, even in season.

Close to the marina, it offers basic facilities such as free parking and amenities in town just steps away.

Location

Detailed information

The beach of Grenå Strand is oriented east towards the Baltic Sea, which favors side-on winds from the northwest or west for optimal navigation. Onshore winds from the northeast also work well but can make the water surface more choppy. The navigation area extends 1 to 2 km offshore with enough space for jibes and tricks, but stay vigilant in areas close to the marina to the south.

Launching is easy everywhere on the wide beach, with takeoff possible directly from the dry sand. Beware of frequent strong gusts, up to 35 kts in gusts, which require experience. Depending on the tides, the water surface remains navigable but can be flatter at high tide.

Local peculiarity: the long fetch from Sweden sometimes generates short waves of 0.7 to 2 m, perfect for moderate wave kiting. Avoid pure east winds (offshore) days as the beach quickly becomes downwind towards the north.

Risks & Safety

  • Rocks are exposed near the marina to the south, to be avoided at all costs.

  • Extreme gusts up to 35 kts require experience, do not launch at a low level.

  • Beware of fishermen and boats coming out of the marina, prioritize the northern area of the beach.

  • Cold water poses a risk of hypothermia, always wear a 5/4 wetsuit.
