Conditions de navigation

The beach of Grenå Strand is oriented east towards the Baltic Sea, which favors side-on winds from the northwest or west for optimal navigation. Onshore winds from the northeast also work well but can make the water surface more choppy. The navigation area extends 1 to 2 km offshore with enough space for jibes and tricks, but stay vigilant in areas close to the marina to the south.

Launching is easy everywhere on the wide beach, with takeoff possible directly from the dry sand. Beware of frequent strong gusts, up to 35 kts in gusts, which require experience. Depending on the tides, the water surface remains navigable but can be flatter at high tide.

Local peculiarity: the long fetch from Sweden sometimes generates short waves of 0.7 to 2 m, perfect for moderate wave kiting. Avoid pure east winds (offshore) days as the beach quickly becomes downwind towards the north.

Vent ideal
NE
E
SE
S

Ideal conditions are winds of 15-25 kts from the NW or W, side-on, with waves of 1 m. Perfect for freestyle/wave sessions without stress.

État de la mer

The water surface is generally choppy with short waves of 0.7 to 2 m and periods of 3-5 s. In side-on wind, it remains navigable for freestyle or wave.

High tide offers more depth, low tide exposes sand but keeps the water deep near the shore.

Courants marins

Currents are weak to moderate along the coast, influenced by the Baltic tides with an amplitude of 0.2-0.5 m. Beware of the channels near the marina where the current can accelerate.

No major rip currents, but the general flow goes north in offshore wind.

Taille de kite recommandée

Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 11 m² in medium wind, drop to 7-9 m² in strong gusts. In light winds (10 kts), go up to 12-14 m².

Météo & vent

The prevailing winds come from the northwest and west, with average speeds of 15-25 kts and gusts up to 35 kts. No specific local name, but it is regular thermo-frontal wind due to Atlantic depressions.

Forecasts often show strong SW to NW during the day, ideal for afternoon sessions. The best wind scores are consistent year-round, peaking in winter and autumn.

Climat

The climate in Grenå is temperate oceanic, with cool temperatures year-round. In spring (April-May), expect 10-15°C in the air, up to 20-25°C in summer. Autumn brings cool days around 10-16°C.

The kitesurfing season runs from April to November, with moderate rain risks but reliable winds. Winters are cold (0-5°C) and windy, but the water sometimes freezes.

Profondeur

The depth is gradual with a clean sandy bottom. You can stand up to 50-100 m from the shore, perfect for relaunching.

Température de l’eau

The water is cold: 8-13°C in spring, 18-23°C in summer, and 10-15°C in autumn. A thick wetsuit is mandatory outside of summer.
