Bønnerup Strand is a coastal spot in the central Jutland region of Denmark. It features an open beach facing the North Sea with generous riding space for experienced riders.
The spot is appreciated for its shallow water that remains knee-deep over a large area, ideal for working on advanced tricks. The atmosphere is calm, with few people outside the summer season.
Close to the small marina of Bønnerup Lystbådehavn, it is a convenient place to combine a kite session with a seaside stroll.
The Bønnerup Strand spot faces the North Sea, with a beach mainly exposed to winds from south-southeast to southeast (SSE to SE), which are side-on perfect for stable riding. Onshore winds from the south work well but can create moderate chop, while SW directions are more side-shore and clean.
Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, wide and without major obstacles. The launch area is spacious at the beach edge, with enough room to inflate safely. The riding area extends several hundred meters offshore, with knee-deep water everywhere, allowing for ground tricks without the risk of collisions.
No significant tide impacting the spot, the water surface remains constant. Watch out for boats coming out of the nearby marina, especially in summer; stay offshore. The spot works better during the day with thermals, and the waves remain small, around 0.5 to 0.7 m in strong winds.
Ideal conditions are side-on winds from south-southeast at 18-25 knots, stable and without too much chop to take advantage of the shallow water.
The water surface is choppy in strong winds, with short waves of 0.5 to 0.7 m. In moderate winds, it remains relatively clean due to the shallow water calming the waves.
Currents are generally weak at this coastal spot. Tides are not pronounced and do not impact navigation, with a minimal range typical of the North Sea here.
Opt for sizes 9 to 12 m² in typical winds of 15-25 knots. 7-9 m² for busy days, 11-13 m² in light winds.
The prevailing winds come from the south to southeast, with typical strengths of 12 to 28 knots in season, and gusts up to 30-40 km/h. There is no specific local name, but thermal conditions boost the wind during the day on this open coast.
The climate in central Jutland is oceanic, with cool temperatures year-round. Spring and autumn see air temperatures between 10 and 20°C, summer up to 30°C at peaks, and winter around 0 to 10°C. The kite season extends from April to November.
The depth is very shallow, water knee-deep throughout the entire riding area, with a sandy bottom everywhere. Perfect for advanced tricks without risk.
The water is cold: 8-13°C in spring, 18-23°C in summer, and 10-16°C in autumn. A full wetsuit is mandatory outside of summer.
