The Circolo Velico Ortigia spot is located in the Porto Piccolo d'Ortigia, a sheltered water area that offers easy access from the docks or adjacent small beaches. The beach orientation faces southeast, making south and southwest (Libeccio) side-on winds perfect, while northeast (Grecale) winds are side-off and can close the spot by creating chop in the harbor.
The navigation area is limited in the harbor due to moored boats and mooring zones, generally staying near the exit to avoid obstacles. For more freeride sessions, schools like Trickite depart from here to open beaches like La Playa de Siracusa or Granelli, 30-45 minutes by car. Takeoff is done from the docks or small grassy areas of the club, with supervision from instructors.
Tides have little impact here due to natural protection, but at low tide the bottom can be more visible with some rocks. Local feature: the spot serves as a logistical base for kite schools that adapt outings to the day's wind, ideal for beginners in enclosed water before moving to open sea.
Ideal conditions are winds of SW 15-20 knots side-on, for a flat water surface and safe navigation outward.
The water surface is generally flat to light chop in the harbor, ideal for freestyle or foil. In strong winds, a moderate chop forms at the harbor exit.
Currents are weak in Porto Piccolo thanks to the shelter of Ortigia. However, be cautious when heading out to open sea where they can intensify with the tides.
Tides are moderate in the Mediterranean, with a range of about 30-50 cm.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12 m² in typical conditions, 7-9 m² for windy days, and 12-14 m² in light winds.
The prevailing winds are Libeccio (SW) and Scirocco (SE) in autumn-winter, with average strengths of 15-25 knots. The Grecale (NE) blows strong in winter but makes the harbor choppy.
Typical wind score around 62/100, with consistency throughout the year according to local data.
The Mediterranean climate of Syracuse offers warm summers with temperatures around 28-32°C and mild winters around 12-16°C. Rainfall is rare except in winter, making the spot usable year-round.
The best months for kiting are from September to April with more wind, while summer is calmer but perfect for warm water.
The depth is gradual from 1-2 meters from the shore, with a sandy-rocky bottom. You can stand in the first few meters near the beaches.
In summer, the water reaches 24-26°C, 18-20°C in spring-autumn, and 15-17°C in winter.
