Trappeto

Spiaggia Ciammarita, in Trappeto, Sicily, is a long sandy beach appreciated by local riders for its easy access and still quite open setting. It is a spot known for sessions when the wind comes in properly, with an overall level rather suitable for beginners to intermediates depending on the day's conditions.

The spot mainly works on an exposed beach, with a sandy bottom and a semi-urban environment. In summer, attendance can be high, but there is generally enough space to ride if one chooses their launch area and timing wisely.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

Ciammarita is an open beach to the sea, so the wind often arrives in a side-shore to side-on configuration depending on the day's flow orientation. The most consistent feedback speaks of a spot that works well with winds from West to North-West, and can also provide good sessions with the Scirocco from the South-East when it is well established. The water surface is generally cleaner offshore, with a sometimes slightly choppy water's edge near the shorebreak when the wind picks up.

Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, which remains simple for taking off and landing the kite. The terrain is quite comfortable for a start, but one must keep space around them as the beach can be crowded in season. The spot is interesting for riding along the beach with easy back-and-forths, and it is better suited for riders capable of managing beach traffic and sometimes irregular wind near the shore.

When the wind strengthens, the area close to the shore can become more physical, with a bit of entry chop and gusts related to thermal or front passage. The best choice often remains to ride slightly offshore to enjoy a cleaner water surface. The spot is therefore easy to access, but it requires staying attentive to other swimmers, marked areas, and the density of occupancy in summer.

The best sessions occur with a well-established, clean, and steady wind from North-West to West. The spot also works well with a good South-East when the flow is stable enough, but the most comfortable conditions remain those of a moderate side-shore wind, sufficient to smooth the water surface without making it too physical.

To fully enjoy the spot, it is better to aim for an intensity around 15 to 25 knots, with stable wind and a bit of space on the beach. Below this, the session may lack power; above this, the edge becomes more demanding and riding more engaged.

Sea state

The water surface is most often flat to slightly choppy, with a generally cleaner sea offshore than in the first few meters. When the sea rises or the wind comes in strong, a bit of chop can appear, especially in the area close to the shore.

The spot remains rather oriented towards freeride, with an accessible and readable water surface. In good weather, there is a fairly comfortable surface for long runs, while in strong wind or rough sea, riding becomes more physical and requires more control.

Sea currents

Currents are generally moderate, but they can become more pronounced when the wind picks up or when the sea is rougher. One must stay attentive to possible lateral drifts on an open beach, especially if sailing far from the shore or if the wind is irregular.

The tide has little influence on daily practice compared to other Atlantic spots, but it can affect the usable width of the beach and the quality of the water's edge. The passage of current should be monitored locally, particularly after heavy rains or during dirtier conditions near the shore.

Recommended kite size

In typical conditions, the most useful sizes often range from 7 to 10 m². With wind around 23 knots, a kite of 8 to 9 m² will often be the most logical choice for many sizes, while heavier riders may prefer 10 m² if the wind is irregular.

In lighter wind, one can use a 11 m², but as soon as the thermal strengthens or the flow from the West to North-West becomes consistent, 7 to 8 m² become very interesting.

Weather & wind

The most interesting wind regime for Ciammarita is often linked to North-West and West flows, with a thermal contribution that can enhance the session in the hot season. Local sources and feedback from practitioners also indicate good sessions with the Scirocco, from the South-East, when it is clean and steady enough.

In summer, the thermal can take over in the afternoon and shift around a fairly stable North-West flow, often within a usable range for freeride. With the wind already established in the synoptic, the spot can quickly gain power, making it an interesting site as soon as the local regime settles well.

Climate

The coast of Trappeto enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers and often very pleasant interseasons. From late spring to early autumn, temperatures are most comfortable for kiting, with water and air warm enough to string together sessions without a thick wetsuit.

Summer can become very hot on the beach, especially during peak hours, while spring and autumn often offer the best compromise between wind, temperature, and attendance. Winter remains navigable on certain days, but conditions become more variable and cooler, with more swell and disturbed passages.

Depth

The bottom is mainly sandy and the depth increases quite gradually, making it easier to start and perform basic maneuvers. One can generally stand close to the shore over a good distance, but the slope can become steeper as one moves away from the beach.

The spot is therefore quite simple for launching, with a clear reading of the bottom. However, one must remain cautious if the swell or currents alter the area close to the shore, especially in sectors where the beach dips a bit more.

Water temperature

The water is most pleasant from June to October, with temperatures often suitable for a shorty or a light wetsuit depending on the period. In mid-summer, the water can become quite warm, making sessions very comfortable.

In spring and autumn, the water remains usable but often requires a bit more protection, especially early in the morning or on windy days. In winter, temperatures drop significantly and a warmer wetsuit becomes necessary.
