The beach is oriented north-south, facing west, ideal for northwest winds (thermal side-on peeling to the right) and maestrale (onshore or side-off). The water is generally chop with thermal winds between 10 and 20 knots, perfect for freeride and freestyle.
With maestrale disturbances, the wind rises and forms waves with powerful shorebreak, reserved for intermediates and pros. Launching is done on the wide beach, with a dedicated take-off area near schools like Hang Loose Beach at Pesce e Anguille.
The navigation area is wide thanks to the open bay, ensuring an easy return to shore even in case of drift. Avoid the crowded central area of the schools; prefer a bit north for thermal or south for scirocco. Tides are neutral, rapid depth.
Ideal conditions are with northwest thermal 12-18 knots, constant side-on for freestyle and freeride on manageable chop. Avoid too strong maestrale beyond 25 knots if there are waves.
The water is crystal clear, with moderate chop under thermal conditions and short waves under strong maestrale, accompanied by shorebreak. Not ideal for pure wave surfing.
Currents are generally weak in the protected bay. Beware of maestrale disturbances where they can intensify near the coast.
Tides are neutral for practice, with no major impact on navigation.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12 m² with thermal winds of 10-20 knots. 7-9 m² for stronger maestrale with waves.
The wind regime relies on the northwest thermal, which blows every day of high pressure from April to September, between 10 and 20 knots, consistent and side-on. The maestrale from the west dominates in summer and disturbances, sometimes forming waves.
Other possible directions: northeast, southeast, south, northwest. The spot is one of the windiest in Italy, with very reliable summer thermals.
The Mediterranean climate of Gizzeria offers warm summers around 25-30°C and mild winters around 10-15°C. The best months for kiting are from April to September with daily thermals.
Winter brings windy disturbances, but summer dominates with reliable thermal winds almost every day of high pressure.
The depth is gradual at first then steep, with a sandy bottom. You can stand in the first 20-30 meters, then it quickly gets deep.
In summer, the water reaches 22-25°C, comfortable in a shorty. Winter around 14-17°C, 5/3 mm neoprene recommended. Spring-autumn around 18-21°C.
