The Punta Pellaro spot faces the Strait of Messina, with thermal winds mostly side-on to side-shore coming from the northwest or west, due to the acceleration between Calabria and Sicily. Launching is done directly from the wide sandy beach, with no obstacles, and the take-off area is spacious, ideal for both beginners and advanced riders.
The water surface is generally flat to light chop during the day, with small innocent swells in strong wind, perfect for progression. The navigation area extends several hundred meters offshore, with enough space for freeride, jumps, and even light waves in summer. Be cautious near the shore where the bottom rises quickly, but the school teaches in deep water starting from 1.5 m minimum for good skill acquisition.
Sessions often last all day thanks to the thermal that rises around noon, and there is rescue organized by local centers. Prefer the southern beach area to avoid crowds in high season.
Ideal conditions are a side-on wind of 15-25 knots from the NW, with a flat water surface to maximize jumps and freestyle. Perfect for all levels thanks to the wide beach and offshore space.
The water surface is smooth with gentle swells, perfect for a fluid ride. The sea is clear and shallow near the shore, with a clean sandy bottom.
In strong wind, it can become choppy, but nothing too harsh for intermediates.
Currents are generally weak to moderate in the main navigation area, influenced by the Strait of Messina. Beware of stronger currents near channels or when going too far offshore.
Tides are not pronounced in the Mediterranean, with a low amplitude that does not significantly impact the spot.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in standard thermal conditions of 16-25 knots. Beginners should take 12 m², while experts can go down to 7-9 m² in gusts.
Thermal winds are consistent, with an average strength of 16-25 knots for more than 320 days a year. There is no specific local name, but it is the famous "strait wind" accelerated by the geography between Italy and Sicily, predominantly from the NW to W.
The thermal rises around 10 AM and lasts until evening in high season, reliable even in winter.
The Mediterranean climate of Calabria ensures pleasant temperatures year-round, with hot summers around 28-32°C and mild winters at 12-18°C. The region enjoys sunshine for more than 300 days a year, making the spot usable even outside the summer season.
Rainfall is rare in summer but more frequent in winter, without stopping the wind.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom, reaching up to about 50-100 m from the shore depending on the tide. Beyond that, it drops quickly to over 2 m, ideal for teaching in deep water.
In summer, the water reaches 24-26°C, with no wetsuit needed. In spring and autumn, expect 18-22°C with a thin suit. In winter, 15-17°C requires a 4/3 wetsuit.
