Westwind Syd Surfschool Spot is located south of Hvide Sande, near the south entrance of the harbor, with direct access to the Ringkøbing Fjord. It is a state-of-the-art surf center offering school, rental, and sales for the whole family.
The spot is ideal for beginners due to its shallow waters, but it also attracts experienced riders who come to enjoy the fjord or the nearby waves of the North Sea.
The atmosphere is relaxed with complete facilities: grassy areas for gear, hot showers, a terrace with a view of the fjord, and an on-site café.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The spot is oriented towards the Ringkøbing Fjord, perfect for a side-on or side-shore wind coming from the west or northwest, which pushes directly towards the calm water. Launching is easy from the sandy beach right in front of the center, with a launch area on the large grassy lawns dedicated to kites and boards.
Navigation takes place in the shallow fjord, where you can stand up to 800 meters from the shore, ensuring safe sessions for beginners. For more advanced riders, you can head out to the North Sea through the south harbor entrance, but be careful to stay away from the channel. Tides have little impact in the fjord, the water remains stable and protected from north winds by the pier.
Local feature: the Westwind center handles large sessions of strong wind without issue, and access is ultra-easy for all levels from the Sdr. Klitvej road.
Ideal conditions are a side-on wind of 15-25 knots from the northwest, providing a clean and powerful water surface without too much chop.
The water surface is generally calm and flat in the fjord, ideal for progression. In strong onshore wind from the North Sea, you may find light chop or small waves near the pier.
Currents are weak in the fjord, thanks to its sheltered configuration. Near the south harbor entrance, they can intensify in the channel leading out to the North Sea.
Tides are moderate and do not significantly alter the main spot.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in standard fjord conditions. In strong west wind, go down to 7-9 m².
The wind regime is reliable due to the west exposure of the Ringkøbing Fjord, with regular sessions in onshore or side-shore from the northwest and west. Wind strengths typically range from 15-30 knots, boosted by Atlantic depressions.
All months are viable for riding, with a peak in the warm season.
The climate of central Denmark is oceanic, with cool temperatures year-round: around 5-10°C in winter and 15-20°C in summer. The seasons are marked by consistent winds, especially from spring to autumn.
Summer sees families and riders flocking, making the spot lively, while winter offers harsher but windier conditions.
The depth is very gradual with a sandy bottom. You can stand up to 800 meters from the shore, perfect for beginners.
Water temperatures are around 5-8°C in winter and 15-18°C in summer in the fjord.
