The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

Riding conditions

The WestWind Nord spot faces the Ringkøbing Fjord, with winds mostly side-shore or side-on from northwest to northeast, perfectly sweeping the area. The launch is directly from the wide sandy beach, with a large lawn for takeoff and gear setup, very convenient even in strong wind.

The navigation area extends over a vast shallow expanse up to 800 meters in the fjord, perfect for freeride and learning without the risk of excessive depth. However, be cautious of very flat areas near the edge, where one can slide on the bottom in case of poorly controlled risers. Tides have little impact here, the water surface remains consistent and accessible.

The WestWind center is top-notch for infrastructure: rental, shop, restaurants, and amenities. It’s a true paradise for riders of all levels, with a family-friendly atmosphere.

Ideal conditions are with winds from N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE, SSE, WNW, NW, NNW, which side-shore the fjord and create a clean water surface. Strength between 12 and 25 knots for a perfect freeride session.

Sea state

The water surface is generally flat to chop, with shallow sandy water that promotes easy gliding. In strong wind from the sea, it can be ridden in small organized waves, but it mostly remains smooth.

Sea currents

Currents are weak to negligible in the fjord, thanks to its sheltered and shallow environment. Tides have a minimal impact on navigation, making the spot very predictable.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes of 8 to 12 m² in typical conditions, with 7-9 m² in strong wind and 10-12 m² for lighter days. Beginners prefer large kites due to the shallow depth.

Weather & wind

The prevailing wind comes from the northwest and west, often steady and strong due to the exposed position of the fjord. Typical strengths range from 15 to 30 knots, with ideal freeride sessions for medium kites.

No specific local name, but the spot is known for its thermal wind during the day and its tramontana gusts in winter.

Climate

The coastal climate of West Jutland is oceanic, with cool temperatures year-round: around 5-10°C in winter and 15-20°C in summer. The best months for kitesurfing are from September to April, with more reliable wind, although the spot works well all year round.

Summers are mild and winters are windy, but always plan for a full wetsuit due to the cool northern air.

Depth

The depth is gradual and very shallow, with feet up to 800 meters in the fjord on a clear sandy bottom. Perfect for falls without risk.

Water temperature

Water temperatures are cool: 4-8°C in winter, 15-18°C in summer. A 5/3 mm wetsuit is recommended year-round.
