Sonderstrand
Denmark
Rømø Sønderstrand is a vast sandy beach on the island of Rømø, in southern Denmark. It is a popular spot for kitesurfers due to its consistent winds and huge space, ideal for parking your car directly on the beach.
The sailing area is marked to respect the UNESCO site of the Wadden Sea, with a large permitted area south of the entrance to Sønderstrand. The conditions are suitable for all levels, from beginners to experts, thanks to a varied water plan and easy access.
The atmosphere is friendly with an active local community, and the spot is accessible by car from neighboring Germany.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The beach of Rømø Sønderstrand is oriented north-south, exposed to the west on the Wadden Sea. The dominant side-on winds come from SW, WSW, W, NW, perfect for smooth sailing along the beach. With SSW or S, it becomes more side-shore, and with NW or NNW, it becomes side-off powerful after a depression passes.
The water plan is shallow with water up to the knees over a large area, evolving into chop and small to medium waves depending on wind strength. The launch area is huge, over 200 hectares marked south of the entrance, with plenty of space to inflate without hindrance.
No major impact from tides on kite conditions, but watch for high sea if you drive on the beach. Stay in the permitted area to avoid fines, temporarily marked since 2025.
