Safety Bay

Tern Point Beach, in Safety Bay, Western Australia, is a popular spot for kiters due to its easy access from Perth, about 45 minutes by car. It overlooks a sheltered bay with a sandbar that separates two distinct riding areas.

On the sheltered side, called The Pond, the water is perfectly flat, ideal for freestyle, while the ocean area is better suited for beginners with its shallow water. The spot attracts a lot of people in season, especially pros and locals.

Despite its reassuring name, Safety Bay can be crowded, and water quality issues sometimes arise, such as recent closures due to bacteria.

Conditions de navigation

The Safety Bay spot offers two main areas separated by a 2-meter high sandbar. On the inside, The Pond features a super flat water surface perfect for freestyle and wakestyle, with side-on winds thanks to the regular sea breeze. Tides do not significantly affect the area, allowing for all-day riding.

On the ocean side, the water is flat with a little chop, ideal for schools and beginner to intermediate riders. The launch area is on a sandy beach with a large shallow zone up to waist-deep, and a sandbar that allows walking far out to relaunch. Beginners are not allowed in The Pond due to heavy traffic and freestyle carousels upstream.

The launch zone is easy, with parking at the yacht club or on the street, but respect etiquette: windsurfing zone downstream, freestyle carousels upstream, and avoid jumps if riders are coming down. The spot is often very busy in summer, with pros training.

Vent ideal

SEdominant

Ideal conditions are with the sea breeze side-on to cross-onshore at 15 to 25 knots, direction SW to W. Constant wind throughout the day without troublesome tides.

État de la mer

The bottom is sandy in both areas, with occasional seaweed on the ocean side. The water remains flat to choppy, with no significant swell thanks to the bay's protection.

Optional neoprene booties are recommended for the seaweed.

Courants marins

Currents are generally weak in the sheltered bay. Tides have little impact on the riding areas, with stable depth.

However, be cautious near channels or in strong winds, where the current can slightly increase.

Taille de kite recommandée

For the typical sea breeze at 22 knots, plan for sizes of 9 to 11m² for beginners, 7 to 9m² for intermediates and freestyle, and 5 to 7m² on stronger days.

Météo & vent

The main wind is the sea breeze, known as the Fremantle Doctor, which blows very consistently, often around 22 knots. The direction is typically cross-onshore or side-on from the southwest or west during the day.

This thermal breeze is predictable and steady year-round, particularly reliable from November to February.

Climat

The climate in Safety Bay is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers from November to February, the best season for kitesurfing. Winters are mild and wet, but the wind remains reliable year-round.

Temperatures range from 20-30°C in summer to 15-20°C in winter, with plenty of sunshine and little rain during peak season.

Profondeur

The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom. On the ocean side, you can stand for several hundred meters due to the sandbar, perfect for beginners.

In The Pond, the water rises quickly to 2-3m but remains navigable.

Température de l’eau

In summer (Nov-Feb), the water is at 22-25°C, no wetsuit or shorty needed. In winter, it drops to 18-20°C, a 3/2 wetsuit is recommended.
