Perth

Woodman Point is a kitesurfing spot located in the suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. This headland offers three distinct beaches oriented in different directions, with conditions suitable for all levels of riders. The southeast beach is perfect for beginners due to its shallow water, while the southwest beach offers flat or small waves depending on the wind, and the north beach is ideal for freestyle with its mirror-like water.

The spot is sheltered by Garden Island, making the conditions calmer and the water crystal clear. It is easily accessible from Perth, with nearby parking, but care should be taken against car theft. The best months to go are from October to April, with regular southeast winds.

In winter, northwest winds can pick up, but they are less reliable. There are buoys marking the zones and seasonal kitesurfing bans from September 1 to January 31.

Location

Detailed information

Woodman Point consists of three beaches with varying conditions depending on the wind direction. On Beach 1 (southeast), onshore winds from the southeast or south-southeast (SSE, SE, ESE) in the summer morning create a protected flat water with little chop, perfect for beginners and schools. The launch area is to the east of the main zone for novices, leaving space for learners. The beach is narrow, with obstacles like trees, walls, and signs at the launch.

Beach 2 (southwest) works well in cross-onshore, offering flat or small fun waves depending on the swell. Summer winds create a smooth water surface. For Beach 3 (north), summer offshore winds (sea breeze) provide mirror-like water ideal for freestyle and wakestyle, but it is reserved for advanced riders: respect the freestyle carousel, avoid short edges and turns in front of others. Access via Beach 2 on foot, not through the dunes. Avoid WSW to NNE winds that are offshore or unsuitable on Beach 1. The spot is independent of tides, with areas marked by buoys.

Risks & Safety

  • There are sharp shells and a sharp reef present on the beach, watch out to avoid cutting the kite.

  • Frequent thefts in the parking lots: do not leave anything valuable in the car and always lock it.

  • On Beach 3, there is a risk of long rescue in offshore; reserved for advanced riders.

  • Respect the no-go zones around the jetty and to the northeast, as well as freestyle etiquette.

  • Avoid the dunes under rehabilitation and do not walk on them.
