Perth

Woodman Point is a kitesurfing spot located in the suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. This headland offers three distinct beaches oriented in different directions, with conditions suitable for all levels of riders. The southeast beach is perfect for beginners due to its shallow water, while the southwest beach offers flat or small waves depending on the wind, and the north beach is ideal for freestyle with its mirror-like water.

The spot is sheltered by Garden Island, making the conditions calmer and the water crystal clear. It is easily accessible from Perth, with nearby parking, but care should be taken against car theft. The best months to go are from October to April, with regular southeast winds.

In winter, northwest winds can pick up, but they are less reliable. There are buoys marking the zones and seasonal kitesurfing bans from September 1 to January 31.

Conditions de navigation

Woodman Point consists of three beaches with varying conditions depending on the wind direction. On Beach 1 (southeast), onshore winds from the southeast or south-southeast (SSE, SE, ESE) in the summer morning create a protected flat water with little chop, perfect for beginners and schools. The launch area is to the east of the main zone for novices, leaving space for learners. The beach is narrow, with obstacles like trees, walls, and signs at the launch.

Beach 2 (southwest) works well in cross-onshore, offering flat or small fun waves depending on the swell. Summer winds create a smooth water surface. For Beach 3 (north), summer offshore winds (sea breeze) provide mirror-like water ideal for freestyle and wakestyle, but it is reserved for advanced riders: respect the freestyle carousel, avoid short edges and turns in front of others. Access via Beach 2 on foot, not through the dunes. Avoid WSW to NNE winds that are offshore or unsuitable on Beach 1. The spot is independent of tides, with areas marked by buoys.

W

Ideal conditions are SE to ESE winds of 15-25 knots in summer on Beach 1 and 2 for flat onshore or cross-on. For the north, light offshore summer sea breeze for mirror freestyle.

État de la mer

The water is crystal clear, with a sandy bottom. There is mirror flat on the north and southeast beaches, sheltered from the swell, and small waves on the southwest beach in cross-on wind conditions. Little chop thanks to natural protection, perfect for freestyle or beginner waves.

Courants marins

Currents are generally weak due to the protection of Garden Island. However, caution is advised near channels or marked areas, where they can accelerate with the tides. The spot is independent of tides, with no major influence on navigation.

Taille de kite recommandée

Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in average summer SE winds. 7-9 m² for strong days, 11-13 m² for light mornings or winter.

Météo & vent

Typical winds are sea breezes from the southeast (SE) in summer from October to April, regular and consistent, often blowing 15-25 knots in the afternoon. In winter, northwest (NW) winds sometimes pick up, but they are less reliable. The pattern is seasonal, with light and gusty SE mornings for summer.

Climat

The climate around Perth is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers from November to March, and mild, wet winters from May to August. Summer temperatures often reach 25-35°C during the day, ideal for kiting in shorts. In winter, it is 15-20°C, with occasional rain but possible northwest windy days.

Profondeur

The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom. Shallow water (standing depth) on Beach 1 southeast extends for several hundred meters, ideal for beginners. Deeper elsewhere, but always safe.

Température de l’eau

In summer (Nov-Mar), the water reaches 22-26°C, with no need for a wetsuit. In winter (May-Aug), it drops to 18-21°C, a shorty wetsuit is often sufficient.
