Informations utiles
Back Beach works well with cross winds (side-on or side-shore) coming from the NW or W, which are the most common in Lancelin. The water surface is generally choppy with waves, perfect for wave riding, especially in the morning before the wind picks up and makes the waves more aggressive. The launch is directly from the wide beach, but there is no launching allowed on Back Beach itself: plan to inflate elsewhere or use the southern area by walking 200m from the toilets.
Stay to the south to avoid windsurfing areas to the north and wind shadows near Edward Island. Navigation is done by staying upwind to the left of the spot to avoid boats and fishermen. Be cautious of offshore winds (NNE to SSE) that can push you out quickly. The spot is spacious, with room to maneuver, but respect wave etiquette with surfers and windsurfers.
Ideal conditions are side-on winds from NW to W between 15 and 25 knots, for good control over the waves without too much chop.
The water surface features rolling waves due to a sandbank 20m from the shore, without large destructive shorebreak. It is more choppy than the lagoon, with waves suitable for freeride.
Currents are strong in places, especially near Edward Island and in the channels. Tides influence the water surface, with reefs exposed at low tide.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12m² in medium wind, and 7 to 9m² when it’s blowing hard to manage the waves.
The wind pattern is reliable in Lancelin, with NW and W trade winds dominating, blowing regularly at 15-25 knots during the season. It is a spot exposed to thermal winds that pick up in the afternoon.
The climate in Lancelin is pleasant year-round, with hot summers reaching up to 42°C and mild winters around 4°C. The best months for kiting are from October to April, with consistent wind and manageable temperatures.
The depth quickly becomes significant after a sandbank at 20m, with a sandy bottom and no direct reef at the shore, but be cautious of rocky areas nearby.
Water temperatures range from 18°C in winter to 24°C in summer.
