Back Beach
Australia · Australie occidentale
Back Beach, located facing Edward Island in Lancelin, Western Australia, is a large beach popular with local surfers for its shorebreak and calm atmosphere. It is a quiet spot, often less crowded than the nearby lagoon, ideal when there is little swell.
The beach offers plenty of space to set up and ride, with hard sand that allows easy access by 4x4. The conditions are varied, with waves close to the shore and a more open water surface.
Locals come here for relaxed sessions, especially on days when other spots are crowded.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
Back Beach works well with cross winds (side-on or side-shore) coming from the NW or W, which are the most common in Lancelin. The water surface is generally choppy with waves, perfect for wave riding, especially in the morning before the wind picks up and makes the waves more aggressive. The launch is directly from the wide beach, but there is no launching allowed on Back Beach itself: plan to inflate elsewhere or use the southern area by walking 200m from the toilets.
Stay to the south to avoid windsurfing areas to the north and wind shadows near Edward Island. Navigation is done by staying upwind to the left of the spot to avoid boats and fishermen. Be cautious of offshore winds (NNE to SSE) that can push you out quickly. The spot is spacious, with room to maneuver, but respect wave etiquette with surfers and windsurfers.
