São Miguel

Praia de Água D'Alto, in São Miguel in the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo, is a large beach on the south of the island. It is a popular spot for its easy access and for allowing kitesurfing when other nearby beaches are more crowded.

The spot is mainly known as a good alternative to Praia das Milícias when the conditions are right. It features an open setting, easy access to the water, and conditions that are particularly favorable for intermediates, with sometimes a cleaner water surface depending on the swell and wind.

The spot works best with a wind from the E to NE sector, which generally arrives side-shore to side-on relative to the beach. With a more S to SE oriented flow, kitesurfing remains possible but the wind often becomes more irregular and less clean at the shoreline. On the kitesurfing side, the most practical area is located near the main launch sector, to the left of Bahia Palace, where the space is clearer for preparing and launching.

At low tide, the water surface is often more interesting for riders looking to start early and keep space in the area close to the shore. At high tide, the beach can become more compact and the launch area shrinks, especially if the attendance is high. The spot can offer flat water when the sea is clean, but it quickly takes on chop as the wind strengthens or the swell comes in. When the southwest or south swell is present, there can also be a bit more relief in the water surface. The launch is from the beach, with a fairly wide navigation area that must be shared with swimmers in season.

Vent ideal
S
SW
W
SE

Wind around 15 to 22 knots, on a relatively clean sea. In these conditions, the spot is easier to exploit and the launch from the beach remains comfortable. A slightly side-shore flow is generally the most pleasant for kitesurfing calmly.

When the wind is well established and the swell remains low to moderate, Água D'Alto becomes a very decent freeride spot, with enough space to go upwind without stress.

État de la mer

The water conditions vary between flat and chop, depending on the state of the sea and the strength of the wind. When the spot is working well, one can achieve a fairly clean ride for freeride. As soon as the swell comes in, the water surface gains more texture and becomes less smooth.

The presence of small waves mainly depends on the swell. On a well-oriented day, the spot can offer a versatile playground, but one should most often expect a mix of small chop and smoother areas near the shore.

Courants marins

The current is generally moderate, but it can strengthen near certain passages when the swell enters the bay better. The tide influences the quality of the spot, with often more interesting conditions at mid-tide. At low tide, the working space is more comfortable, while at high tide the beach becomes smaller and the edge can become trickier to manage.

It is important to stay attentive when returning to the shore if the wind drops or if the sea becomes more formed. The current is not the most critical point of the spot, but it is still necessary to monitor the drift when the south swell is present.

Taille de kite recommandée

With the local wind often between 15 and 22 knots, the most useful sizes are generally between 8 and 10 m². In stronger winds, a 7 m² may become necessary, especially for heavier riders or more exposed sessions. Below 15 knots, one often needs to switch to 10 to 12 m² depending on the rider's weight.

Météo & vent

The wind regime is variable, but the most interesting windows often come with winds from the east to northeast. Local guides and spot reports mention a wind that is often usable in spring and summer, with days around 15 to 22 knots in the best sequences, and sometimes more when the trade winds set in well.

At this spot, an E, NE or N wind is generally the cleanest. Winds from S, SE or SW can also come in, but they are often more disturbed by the coastal configuration. The spot is not known for ultra-consistent thermal winds; it is better to monitor weather windows and local updates.

Climat

The climate of São Miguel is oceanic, with mild temperatures year-round. Summer remains pleasant, without extreme heat, and winter is rather temperate, with humid air and possible showers. The best periods for kitesurfing generally fall between May and October, when the wind is more consistent and conditions are more stable.

Air temperatures are often between 18 and 26°C in summer, and between 13 and 18°C in winter. The water remains cool even in the hot season, making a wetsuit essential for a large part of the year.

Profondeur

The depth is gradual and the bottom is generally sandy in the usable beach area. One can stand for quite a while at the shore, which facilitates getting in and returning to the beach. However, it is important to remain cautious of rockier areas on the sides of the spot.

Température de l’eau

The water remains cool year-round. In summer, one often kites around 22 to 24°C in the water at best, while in winter it frequently drops to 16 to 18°C. A long wetsuit is recommended for a large part of the year, with sometimes neoprene accessories in spring and autumn.
