Peniche

Praia do Baleal is a large sandy beach located just north of Peniche, facing the Atlantic. It stretches on either side of the small peninsula of Baleal, with a bay to the south and a long beach to the north. The atmosphere is very surf and kitesurf oriented, with several schools, a few beach bars, and a village that remains human-sized.

It is a spot known for its consistent waves and often choppy water. People come to Baleal to ride the waves, enjoy the different beach orientations, and almost always find a usable spot depending on the wind and swell.

The spot of Praia do Baleal is actually a set of beaches oriented differently around the peninsula of Baleal. The bay to the south is rather oriented east/southeast, while the beach to the north faces north/northwest. This allows for playing with wind and swell orientations to find the best kitesurfing conditions.

Winds from N to NW are the most frequent in thermal season. On the bay of Baleal (south side), this wind generally arrives side-on or side-shore depending on the area, providing conditions suitable for kitesurfing in the waves. On the north beach, a wind from the N to NW sector arrives more side to side-off depending on the spot, which is more technical and requires good control. Winds from W also work, with a wind often side-on in certain sections of the bay.

The water is very rarely flat. The sea is exposed to the Atlantic swell and constantly offers a mix of waves and chop. One can have simple lines of 0.5 m to 1 m on calm days, but also sets of 2 to 3 m and more during large swells. The beachbreak nature means that the waves break over sandbanks, sometimes with deeper areas and powerful shorebreaks at high tide.

Launching is done from the large sandy beach, with plenty of space to prepare and launch the kite. Launching is generally simple, but one must take into account the shorebreak and the power of the waves, especially at high tide. It is recommended to launch far from surfers, especially around the peaks of Prainha and Lagide, which are very crowded with surfers. The further one positions from the main surf areas, the more space one has for kiting.

The main kitesurfing area is located offshore from the sandbanks, staying well upwind of groups of surfers and the rocks near the tip of Baleal Island. The spot works practically at all tides, but the character of the wave changes a lot. At mid-tide and low tide, the sandbanks create more readable wave lines. At high tide, the wave is often more disordered with a more pronounced shorebreak, complicating the launch and return to the beach.

Local specifics to keep in mind are the presence of several very busy surf peaks, exposed rocks near the tip of Baleal, and, on some days, slightly irregular winds when the direction becomes too side-off in certain sections. Overall, Praia do Baleal is an interesting and varied wave spot, but it remains rather intended for riders already comfortable navigating in swell.

The ideal conditions for Praia do Baleal are generally found with a wind from N to NW established around 15 to 25 knots, a moderate swell, and a tide that is neither too high nor too low. In these conditions, the bay offers beautiful waves suitable for strapless or twin-tip riding, with a wind often side-on relatively safe on the south bay.

État de la mer

The water at Praia do Baleal is clearly oriented towards waves. The area is almost never truly flat. There is a mix of long swell and strong wind that generates chop. Wave heights can vary from 50 cm on calm days to over 3 to 4 m during large winter swells.

The waves break over sandbanks, with several distinct peaks. For kitesurfing, this allows for searching for cleaner sections to ride strapless or on a wave-oriented twin-tip. On days of strong wind and large swell, the sea state becomes very choppy, with tight chop between sets and a powerful impact zone, requiring good bar-passing technique.

Courants marins

The currents at Praia do Baleal are mainly related to the tide and the movement of the swell along the beach. Drift currents can form parallel to the coast, especially on days of strong swell, pushing riders along the bay.

Near the rocky points and various sandbanks, small rip currents can form, which can be surprising if one remains static in the wave impact zone. Overall, the current remains manageable for an intermediate or advanced rider, but it requires staying attentive, especially during large swells and stronger tides.

Taille de kite recommandée

For a rider weighing around 75 kg, the most commonly used kite sizes at Baleal are around 10 m to 12 m for typical days of 12 to 20 knots. When the thermal or depression winds pick up stronger, one easily switches to smaller kites of 7 m to 9 m. On lighter wind days, a 12 m or even larger can be useful if one wants to ride the waves with less power in the kite.

Météo & vent

The wind regime at Praia do Baleal is marked by a combination of thermal winds in summer and depression winds in the interseason and winter. From May to August, there are often winds from N to NW stabilizing between about 12 and 25 knots during the day, with lighter or stronger days depending on the situation. These winds are the most appreciated for kitesurfing in the bay.

In winter and interseason, winds from the W to SW sector can blow stronger, sometimes well beyond 25 knots, with more muscular conditions and larger waves. The spot covers a wide range of wind directions thanks to the bay configuration, but the N, NE, W, and NW directions remain the most used for kiting.

Climat

The climate of Peniche and Baleal is of the mild Atlantic type. Winters are relatively humid, with air temperatures often between 10 and 16 °C, and disturbances bringing wind and swell. Summers are drier and moderately warm, with daytime values around 22 to 27 °C, softened by the sea breeze.

The kitesurfing season is possible all year round, but the most consistent conditions in terms of wind and practicality are generally between May and September. In winter, Atlantic storms can generate very large swells and strong winds, which attract experienced riders but make conditions more challenging.

Profondeur

The beach at Baleal offers a gradual depth with a completely sandy bottom in the main launch area. One can stand a good distance from the shore, which makes managing the kite at launch easier, although the presence of waves requires staying focused.

Further offshore, the depth increases rapidly, but there is no reef or coral plateau, only sand with, in some places, a few isolated rocks near the points and ends of the bay. It is important to identify these areas before sailing, especially when the tide is high and visual markers are less obvious.

Température de l’eau

The water temperature remains typically cool all year round at Praia do Baleal, with the direct influence of the North Atlantic. In winter, the water often ranges between 13 and 15 °C, which necessitates a thick wetsuit of 5/4 mm with possibly a hood, gloves, and booties for long sessions.

In spring and autumn, the water generally ranges between 15 and 18 °C, a 4/3 mm wetsuit remains comfortable. In summer, even though the air is mild, the water rarely exceeds 18 to 20 °C, and most riders keep a 3/2 mm or a light 4/3, especially on windy days.
