Alcabideche

Praia do Guincho, on the Estoril coast west of Lisbon, is a large sandy beach surrounded by dunes and cliffs. It is at the gates of the natural park of Serra de Sintra, with an environment still quite wild despite the proximity of Cascais.

It is a spot renowned for its strong wind and powerful waves. The atmosphere is oriented towards sliding, with many windsurfers, kitesurfers, and surfers as soon as the conditions come into play.

The spot is a large sandy beach open to the ocean, with rocks on the sides of the bay. The main navigation area is located in the center of the beach, where the shorebreak is more regular and access to the water is a bit easier. Launching is done from the sandy beach, but the shorebreak can be violent on days of big swell, which requires experience to get past the bar.

The dominant wind in season is the Nortada, a flow from north to northwest that thermally strengthens in the afternoon. Depending on the exact orientation (N, NNW, NW, or W), the wind generally arrives side-shore to side-on relative to the beach, which is safe for returning to the shore but creates a lot of chop and cross waves. With a strong north wind, it is more side-shore, while with NW to W it tends more towards side-on.

The water surface is mainly wave-oriented, with a mix of chop and swell. The beach captures Atlantic swells very well: one can regularly have waves of 1 to 2.5 meters, or even more on big days. The waves work at all tides, but the shape changes a lot: more volume and power at mid-tide to high tide, a bit more space to manage the shorebreak at lower tide, but it remains rare to find true flat water. One can sometimes find a bit of smoother water between sets or behind certain sections, but the spirit of the spot remains clearly 'wave riding'.

The current is influenced by the swell and strong wind. It can pull along the beach in the dominant direction of the wind and swell, which requires regular upwind riding. In case of big swell, channels and return currents can form and accelerate drift, especially near the rocks on the sides.

The launch area is on the sandy beach, which is wide, but one must deal with the crowds in summer (surfers, bathers, and other kiters). The wind often increases during the day: the thermal can easily reach 25 to 35 knots, or even more on the strongest days. It is important to anticipate this strengthening when choosing kite size. The spot is rated intermediate to advanced due to the strong wind, waves, currents, and side rocks.

In summary, Praia do Guincho is a true spot for powerful waves with strong and often gusty wind, ideal for those who love to ride in ocean swell, much less suitable for freestyle or leisurely cruising.

The ideal conditions for kiting at Praia do Guincho are generally found with a wind from N to NW established between 20 and 30 knots, providing a secure and well-fed side to side-on for wave surfing. In summer, sunny afternoons with a well-established Nortada offer the most regular sessions, with beautiful lines of swell to exploit.

For experienced wave riders, days with long-period swell and established wind around 25 knots are those that allow for fully exploiting the potential of the spot.

État de la mer

The sea conditions at Praia do Guincho are clearly oriented towards waves. The beach is directly hit by Atlantic swells, with regular sets of 1 to 2.5 meters in season, sometimes more. The shorebreak can be powerful, especially at high tide or on days of big swell, and the water surface quickly becomes very technical.

Between sets, the water surface is generally choppy, with a lot of energy and few really smooth areas. Some cleaner sections can be found for surfing the waves, particularly at intermediate tides, but it is not a flat water spot. The waves are suitable for riders looking to surf and perform bottoms and rollers, less so for pure freestyle enthusiasts.

Courants marins

The currents are mainly generated by the swell and strong wind. A lateral current can be felt along the beach, in the direction of the dominant swell, which requires good management of upwind riding. On days of big swell, return currents and powerful water movements can form, especially near the rocks and areas where the waves break.

The spot works at all tides, but the intensity of the currents can vary with the water level and the size of the swell. It is not a typical estuary tidal current spot, but the combination of strong wind and swell creates 'live' water that can surprise a rider not used to the open Atlantic.

Taille de kite recommandée

With wind often between 20 and 30 knots, the most commonly used kite sizes are generally around 7–10 m² for an average-sized rider. Very windy summer days often require kites of 6–8 m², while lighter days or at the beginning/end of the season one can go up to 10–11 m².

It is wise to prepare a quiver more oriented towards smaller sizes, as the spot is known for its strong wind gusts in mid-summer.

Météo & vent

The main wind regime in season is the Nortada, a north to northwest wind that strengthens due to thermal effects between the Serra de Sintra, the warm land, and the cold ocean. On sunny summer days, the wind starts in the late morning, gradually strengthens, and often reaches 20 to 30 knots, even up to 35–40 knots on the strongest days.

The dominant direction is N, NW, and W, which gives a side to side-on wind relative to the beach. The wind is often weaker in the morning, with sometimes calmer sessions, then becomes stronger and sometimes gusty in the middle and late afternoon. This powerful and irregular character makes the spot more suitable for intermediate and advanced riders.

Climat

The climate is of the oceanic Mediterranean type, with mild and humid winters and dry and windy summers. In summer, air temperatures often hover around 22–28 °C during the day, with a breeze that cools in the afternoon. Winter remains relatively mild, with values around 10–16 °C, but the atmosphere is cooler due to the wind and humidity.

The season for strong and regular wind for kiting mainly extends from April to October, with a peak of reliability in mid-summer thanks to the thermal effect. Outside this period, the wind can be more irregular and more related to Atlantic depressions, but the swell often remains present for surfing.

Profondeur

The beach has a sandy bottom with a depth that increases gradually. One can usually stand on a relatively wide strip near the shore, but the slope can be more pronounced depending on the sandbanks and the current swell. As you move away, you quickly enter deep water, especially on days of strong swell where the bar breaks far from the shore.

There are no sharp reefs, but the presence of rocks on the sides requires staying well in the center of the bay to enjoy a predominantly sandy bottom.

Température de l’eau

The water temperature remains cool year-round due to upwelling along the Portuguese coast. In summer, the water generally hovers around 17–19 °C, which necessitates at least a 3/2 mm full wetsuit, or even 4/3 mm for those who feel the cold more. In spring and autumn, the water often drops to 15–17 °C, and in winter it can approach 13–15 °C.

A full wetsuit is therefore recommended in all seasons, possibly with booties and a bit more thickness in winter.

⚠️ Risques & Sécurité

  • Rocks are present on the sides of the bay and offshore, it is essential to avoid drifting towards them.

  • The wind can be very strong and gusty in summer, it is important to choose an appropriate kite and to remain underpowered rather than overpowered.

  • The powerful shorebreak and currents related to the swell can make launching and returning to the beach difficult for inexperienced riders.
