Trafaria

Cova do Vapor, in Trafaria, is a well-known seaside spot for local riders due to its wind exposure and direct access to the Atlantic. The beach offers a simple setting, with a more local than touristy atmosphere, and a launch that can quickly become interesting when the swell comes in.

People come here to ride in conditions that are often suitable for kitesurfing, with a water surface that remains manageable yet lively. The spot is mainly suitable for intermediate riders, while still being attractive for more experienced ones when the wind and swell pick up.

Location

Detailed information

The spot mainly works with wind from the NW to W sector, which most often arrives side-onshore to side-shore depending on the exact orientation of the beach. It is an exposed coastal spot, with navigation that can quickly become more sporty when the pressure rises. Launching is done directly from the beach, in an area that remains decent but requires vigilance during take-off and landing, as space can be limited depending on the crowd and the state of the sand.

The water surface depends a lot on the swell and the tide. When the sea is calm, one mainly finds chop and fairly smooth areas near the beach. When the swell comes in, the spot takes on a true wave character, with short and more nervous waves, particularly near structures and areas of sand stirred by the current. The best runs are often made by keeping a margin offshore to avoid more turbulent areas near the channel and port structures. The spot is not very tide-dependent to function, but low tide can change the shape of the beach, the width of the launch area, and the quality of the wave.

Navigation is generally done in a fairly clean environment for progression, but one must remain attentive to rapid variations in the water surface, especially when the wind is thermal and the swell combines with the estuary current. It is a spot that works well for clean navigation, sending jumps, and maintaining control when conditions become more technical.

Risks & Safety

  • Rocks and structures can create turbulence zones near the shore, so keep your distance.
  • The current can be strong near the estuary entrance and complicate the return to shore.
  • The launch area can be reduced depending on the tide and crowd, so prepare your kite methodically.
