Informations utiles
The spot works best with a south wind, which is side-on relative to the north-south oriented beach. West to north winds are gusty due to surrounding buildings and trees, making navigation more technical.
Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, with a wide take-off area. The navigation area is in the closed bay, protected from outside waves, ideal for progressing upwind without risking the ocean.
The water remains flat to chop even with high tide, as the bay is shallow. Be cautious of areas near the jetties where the wind can be more irregular. Sessions often last all day when the thermal kicks in during the afternoon.
Ideal conditions are a south wind at 12-20 kts, stable and side-on. Avoid days that are too light below 10 kts.
The water surface is generally flat, perfect for freeride and freestyle. Few waves due to the bay's protection, but a slight chop with strong wind.
Currents are weak in the sheltered bay. Tides have little influence on navigation, with a moderate range of 1-2m.
Be cautious of channel areas near the passes, where the current can accelerate slightly.
Opt for sizes 9 to 12m² in typical bay wind. 7-9m² for stronger south days, and 11-14m² when it's light.
The dominant wind comes from the northwest or west, but at Sail Bay it is often light, around 5-15 kts. The south is the most consistent and strongest, ideal for the spot.
No specific local name, but the daytime thermal enhances the wind in the afternoon during summer. Gusts can reach 20 kts with south winds.
The climate in San Diego is Mediterranean, with mild temperatures year-round. Winters are mild around 15-20°C, and summers are warm at 22-28°C.
Little rain, especially in summer. The best months for kiting are from March to October, with more reliable wind.
La profondeur est progressive, avec pied jusqu'à environ 50-100m du bord sur fond sableux. Idéal pour les premières glisses.
Water temperatures range from 14-16°C in winter to 18-22°C in summer. Shorty wetsuit recommended most of the time.
