San Diego

Imperial Beach, in San Diego, California, is a long and wide beach that attracts riders for its generous space and proximity to the city. It is a popular spot among locals who appreciate its consistent wind during the season and its relaxed atmosphere near the pier. The fine sand and public parking make access easy for a hassle-free session.

The spot is located at the end of Seacoast Drive, with a view of the Pacific Ocean and sometimes Tijuana on the other side of the border. The sandbars shift with the seasons, offering variable but often solid conditions for kiting. It is a family-friendly place during the day, which calms down for freeride sessions in the late afternoon.

Close to Coronado, Imperial Beach combines urbanity and nature, with restaurants and shops just steps away to extend the day after riding.

Location

Detailed information

Imperial Beach is oriented southwest, making it ideal for WNW to NW winds that come side-on or side-shore from the left of the beach, perfect for a good pull without too much chop. The launch area is directly from the wide beach, easy even for larger kites, with a take-off zone to the north near the pier or further south towards Seacoast Drive where there are fewer swimmers. The riding area extends 1 to 2 km along the coast, while being cautious of waves near the shore.

The water surface is generally chop to choppy with medium tides working best, as high tide makes the waves mushy and low tide sometimes exposes technical areas. In winter, WNW swells of 3-6 ft add fun for jumps, but be careful of the current that can push south. Morning sessions are often the best with light wind 12-20 kts and cleaner water before the afternoon onshore chops everything up.

Local feature: the moving sandbars create zones A, B, or C depending on the season, sometimes better near the pier, sometimes further south. Avoid crowded weekends and check forecasts for rare but golden offshore E winds.

Risks & Safety

  • Watch out for strong rips that can push south along the beach.

  • Avoid the area of the pier and rocks at low tide where waves dump.

  • Pollution possible near the Mexican border, check health alerts.

  • Many swimmers and surfers on weekends, stay in the dedicated kite zones to the south.
