Tourmaline Beach
United States · Californie
Tourmaline Beach, located at the northern end of Pacific Beach in San Diego, is a popular spot for local surfers and kiters due to its relaxed atmosphere and easy-access parking. You will encounter a mix of longboarders, shortboarders, and sometimes kites, with a friendly vibe away from the more aggressive spots in the area.
The spot consists of three main breaks: Old Man’s to the north with its long, soft waves ideal for beginners, Channels in the middle for a bit more speed, and Pumphouse to the south as a typical Californian beachbreak. It’s a social place where locals gather to chat around a sunset.
For kiting, it’s more sporadic but viable with solid winds, in an accessible urban setting without fuss.

Tourmaline Beach faces west, making it ideal for side-on to side-shore winds coming from the northwest (NW) or west (W), typical of the region. Onshore winds from the southwest can make the water choppy, while offshore winds from the northeast are perfect for cleaning the waves.
Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, with a wide launch area at the water's edge, but be cautious when the surf rises as it can be tricky to exit with light wind inside. The riding area extends along the breaks, staying clear of the surf peaks to avoid surfers; aim for about 200-300m offshore for safe freeriding.
The water surface varies with the tides: at low tide, sandbars form and provide some protection, but high tide mushes out the waves and broadens the rideable area. In winter, big NW swells boost the spot, but for kiting, prefer days with clearing winds 18-25 kts that sweep the chop. Free parking is available at the top of Tourmaline Street, with a 1-2 min walk to the beach.
