Torrance
Rat Beach, nestled in a secluded cove south of Torrance Beach in California, is a popular spot among locals for its tranquil atmosphere and small waves. Accessible via a trail from the Malaga Cove parking lot, it offers a wild setting with fine sand at the foot of the Palos Verdes cliffs. It's an authentic corner where kiters come in small numbers for relaxed sessions.
Less crowded than nearby beaches, Rat Beach attracts intermediate riders who appreciate its open ocean and gently sloping bottom. The spot shares the area with Torrance Beach, often referred to as RAT for 'Right After Torrance', and remains a haven for those seeking peace away from the crowds.

Informations utiles
The prevailing wind comes from the northwest or west, often side-onshore on this beach exposed to the ocean, creating a water surface with chop due to the wind and small to medium side-onshore waves due to swells. The water entry is directly from the fine sand, with a narrow launch area near the beach, to be monitored to avoid rocks to the south near Haggerty's. The navigation area extends into open ocean, ideal for runs parallel to the coast, but remains limited by cliffs and potential currents; the best days see over 100 kites in the air in adjacent areas like Torrance.
With the tides, the water surface varies little as the sandy bottom slopes gradually, but at low tide, the rocks are more exposed, making water entry technical. At high tide, it's smoother with water up to the knees far from the shore. Local peculiarity: it's one of the few legal spots for lessons in the area, but Rat Beach itself is quieter and less crowded, perfect for progressing without pressure.
Ideal conditions are winds of 10-20 kts from the northwest, side-onshore, with small waves for controlled jumps and freestyle. Avoid strong onshore winds that make the chop unmanageable.
The water state mixes choppy wind and small waves of 0.5 to 1.5 m, with a bottom that slopes gently for safe landings. Conditions are cleaner in offshore winds, but typically choppy due to swells wrapping around Palos Verdes.
Currents are generally weak to moderate in open ocean, influenced by tides and swells from the southwest or northwest. Beware of areas near the cliffs where they can accelerate. Tides have a moderate range of about 2 feet, impacting navigability little.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in typical light winds, dropping to 7-9 m² on busier days. Adjust according to your weight and the chop present.
The wind pattern is steady from the northwest, with light to moderate forces suitable for relaxed sessions, often around 10-20 kts on active days. No specific local name, but side-onshore winds create good power for intermediates. Springs bring windier and choppier conditions.
The climate in the Torrance area is mild Mediterranean, with pleasant temperatures year-round: 15-20°C in winter and up to 25-30°C in summer. The dry seasons dominate from May to October, while winter brings more humidity and consistent winds. The best months for kiting are year-round, with no real seasonal peak.
La profondeur est progressive avec un fond sableux qui descend doucement; on a pied jusqu'à une cinquantaine de mètres du bord selon la marée.
Water temperatures range from 14-16°C in winter to 18-22°C in summer; a 3/2 mm wetsuit is usually sufficient.
