Poche Beach, in San Clemente, California, is a popular beach break spot for local surfers and kiters due to its consistent waves and easy access. Located near the highway, it offers a typical Southern California coastal setting with parking and amenities nearby.
It is a beginner-intermediate spot where left and right peaks form on a mix of sand and rocks, particularly fun when the southwest swells arrive. Recent beach erosion has slightly altered the sandbars, but it remains a solid choice for casual sessions.
Close to famous spots like Trestles, Poche Beach attracts a variable crowd depending on the seasons, with a sometimes marked local spirit during peak season.

The spot works well with a NE wind that is side-on to side-off relative to the north-south oriented beach, ideal for cleaning the water surface. Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, with a wide take-off area but be cautious of rocks that are exposed at low tide. The riding area extends 300-500m along the beach, staying clear of the nearby pier to avoid fishermen and crowds.
The water is generally choppy with local light winds, but can become flat in the morning or glassy early in the day. Mid-tide is optimal for depth and wave quality, while at high tide the current slows the breaks. In winter, NW swells bring more size, moving the lineup more offshore on the rocky reef before reforming inside.
Be prepared for short sessions with winds often below 10 mph, typical for the area. The beach break allows for easy jibes, but watch out for rip currents that drain out to sea.
Ideal conditions are a NE 10-15 mph side-off wind, with S-W 2-4 ft swell at mid-tide for a clean and rideable water surface for a long time.
The water is a beach break with typical waves of 2-4 ft, peaking more on S-W swells. A mix of sand and rock, with eroded sandbars making the waves sometimes mushy, but fun at waist-chest high.
At high tide, the waves slow down; low tide exposes the rocks and improves the shapes.
Rip currents are common, especially after big swells or at low tide, draining out to sea from the breaks. Tides vary from 0.5-2m, with moderate coefficients influencing currents near the south channel.
Watch out for backwash near the rocks at high tide, which can create choppy areas.
Opt for larger sizes like 15-20m² given the usual light winds. For the rare windier days (12-18 kts), drop down to 10-12m².
Winds are generally light, often below 10 mph, blowing from the NE in the morning as ideal offshore. In spring and fall, there are 5-10 days per month with enough strength to ride, especially side-on from the northeast.
No specific local name, but thermal gradients create light breezes in the afternoon, shifting cross-on from the south. Forecasts typically show 5-6 kts with gusts.
The climate in San Clemente is mild Mediterranean, with air temperatures between 15-25°C year-round. Mild winters (December-February) see sunny days around 18-20°C, while summer (June-September) rises to 22-28°C with little rain.
Best months for kiting: spring and fall for more consistent winds, but all seasons work thanks to the stable climate.
La profondeur est progressive avec un fond sableux-rocheux. On a pied jusqu'à environ 50m du bord à mi-marée, mais rochers dès basse mer.
Water temperatures hover around 17-19°C in winter/spring, rising to 20-22°C in summer. A 2mm combo or shorty is sufficient year-round.
