Gammarth

Gammarth Beach, located in the northeast of Tunis, is an urban spot known for its easy-access wind sessions and its proximity to the capital. It mainly features a kitesurf practice oriented towards freeride, with simple navigation when the water is well organized.

It is a spot appreciated by riders looking to navigate without straying too far from Tunis. The conditions are often more consistent than on other exposed beaches in the region, but the place remains sensitive to wind direction and local crowds.

Location

Detailed information

At Gammarth, the wind is most often exploitable when it arrives in a side-shore to side-on direction relative to the beach. This is the cleanest configuration for taking off and navigating safely, with a launch area that must remain clear. In too onshore wind, the beach becomes more crowded and navigation is less comfortable, while too offshore wind is not suitable for the spot.

The water surface is generally of the chop type, with a short and broken sea that can form quickly as soon as the wind picks up. Depending on the state of the sea, one can have a cleaner water surface near the shore with low tide and current, but one should not count on a true flat lagoon. The spot is more suited for freeride navigation than for long sessions of perfect flat.

Launching must be done with caution as the area can be busy, especially in season. It is important to keep a good distance from swimmers, monitor swimming zones, and choose a launch point where the kite can be inflated and launched without hassle. When the wind is strong, it is preferable to stay well away from the shore to avoid passing too close to the beach.

Risks & Safety

  • Stay vigilant near the swimming area, as cohabitation with swimmers can be tense during high season.
  • Avoid taking off or landing in a crowded area, as the busy beach leaves little margin.
  • Monitor the wind direction before heading out, as wind that is too offshore or too unstable makes the spot less safe.
