Lagune Souk el Ghebli (Kite Aventure Spot)
Tunisie · Médenine
The Souk el Ghebli lagoon, located on the southern coast of the island of Djerba in Tunisia, is a legendary kitesurfing spot thanks to its vast expanse of flat water. With its 18 to 30 km² of shallow lagoon, it attracts riders of all levels, from beginners to freestylers. Kitesurfing schools are established here, offering an organized setting with paid access or self-launch on the beach.
Close to the dam connecting the island to the mainland, the spot is easily accessible by taxi from Djerba airport. The hard sand beach stretches for several kilometers, also ideal for kitebuggy and mountainboarding. The atmosphere is relaxed, with few people generally despite the immensity of the water body.
Surrounded by sand and an old castle accessible by kite in good wind, the lagoon offers varied sessions, from perfect flat to riding towards the sea for waves.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The water is ultra flat and shallow, with a maximum depth of 1.5m over most of the lagoon, perfect for progressing in freestyle or learning. The launch is done on a wide hard sand beach, with two options: free self-launch or via centers with assistance. The navigation area is immense, allowing for riding far without hindrance, and you can reach an old castle in 20 minutes with NW wind.
The prevailing winds come from the northwest and west, in side-shore ideal for the lagoon, making sessions safe and consistent. With NE wind recommended, the water remains flat but with some chop possible. High tide is preferred for more comfort, although the lagoon is little affected. Be cautious of lateral areas for boats; stay in the center for almost infinite space.
