Port de Pollença, located in the north of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, is a kitesurfing spot in a sheltered bay with views of the mountains. It is a popular place for learners due to its shallow water and calm atmosphere.
The lively port is next to an accessible beach where locals come to ride when the thermal wind picks up in the afternoon. There are kite schools and webcams to check the conditions live.
Ideal for combining kite sessions and walks in the surrounding nature, this spot remains quiet outside of high season.
The spot of Port de Pollença mainly works with onshore winds from NE or NW, typical of the thermal of the bay of Pollensa which rises between 12pm and 6pm in season. Launching is done directly from the beach or the port area, with a slightly narrow rigging area so it's important to store your gear well between sessions.
The riding area is wide with a large standing area in shallow water, perfect for learning kitesurfing or foiling. The water is generally flat to light chop with small waves if the wind is weak, and tides do not impact much given the bay's configuration.
For launching, prefer clear spaces near Sa Marina or Alcudia nearby, and watch the direction: NE 15-25 knots is ideal for riding safely without risking going offshore.
The ideal conditions are a NE 15-25 knots thermal wind in the afternoon, side-on to onshore for flat water and a large riding area.
The water state is generally calm with flat water in light wind, turning to moderate chop when the thermal blows strong. Occasional small waves if the onshore is weak.
The currents are weak in the protected bay of Port de Pollença. Tides have a limited impact, with a moderate range that does not drastically change the conditions.
Opt for sizes 9 to 12m² suitable for frequent light wind, or 7-9m² when the thermal pushes to 20+ knots.
The wind regime relies on the thermal wind of the bay of Pollensa, which picks up in the afternoon during high season with NE or NW directions. Typical speeds range from 10-20 knots, sometimes more with thermals, but it is often light wind.
Windfinder and local webcams confirm that onshore wind dominates, with sessions possible from 12-14 knots forecasted but often rising to 15-20 in reality.
The Mediterranean climate of Mallorca offers hot, dry summers with temperatures around 25-30°C from June to August, the peak months for kite. In spring and autumn, like May or September, it is still mild around 20-25°C with fewer people.
Mild winter but less wind, perfect for alternative activities like yoga or hiking.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom, you can stand in a large area near the shore, ideal for beginners.
The water is at 20-24°C in summer from June to August, around 16-20°C in spring and autumn. Shorty wetsuit recommended outside of high season.
