The beach of Liñares in Abelleira, located on the northern coast of Galicia near Ferrol, is a popular spot among locals for its exposure to northeast winds. chopThe spot mainly works with winds from northeast and north, coming side-on from the right for a rider facing the sea. Launching is easy on the compact sand, with a wide and clear take-off area on the beach. Navigation is done in front of the beach over about 500m to 1km wide before the rocky areas, while staying alert to local rips. Depending on the tides, the water surface goes from light chop at high tide to more technical at low tide where dry areas appear. The best sessions are in the late thermal day in summer, or with established wind in winter.
Ideal conditions are winds NE at 18-25 kts, stable side-on for clean jibes and freestyle. Avoid pure onshore which makes the water surface too chaotic.
The water surface is often choppy with moderate Atlantic swell of 1-2m, especially in winter. In summer, it can become flatter with thermals. The beach is exposed, so side-shore waves make the spot fun for light wave riding.
Currents are generally weak to moderate along the coast, influenced by Atlantic tides that rise and fall by 4-6m. Beware of local rips near rocky points where the current can accelerate. Check tide times to avoid rip zones.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12m² in typical conditions, going down to 7-9m for windy winter days. 11-14m works well for light thermals in summer.
Dominant winds come from the northeast, often thermal during the day in summer with speeds around 15-25 kts. In winter, Atlantic gusts from the northwest can reach 30+ kts, but they are more unpredictable. The Galician climate is oceanic, with mild temperatures year-round: 10-15°C in winter and 20-25°C in summer. Rainfall is frequent, especially in autumn-winter, but the best months for kiting are March, May, and July with a good balance of wind/sun. The water remains cool, making a wetsuit almost always necessary.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom, reaching about 100m from the shore at high tide. At low tide, rocky areas appear, making swimming technical.
The water is cold: 12-15°C in winter-spring, rising to 16-19°C in summer. A 5/3mm wetsuit is recommended year-round, with a shorty in July-August for the warm days.
