Rostro

The beach of Praia a Rostro, on the wild coast of Galicia near Cape Finisterre, is a large stretch of sand facing directly west towards the Atlantic. The place is surrounded by dunes and vegetation, with very few buildings, giving it a rather isolated atmosphere.

It is a beach known to surfers and kitesurfers for its powerful waves and consistent wind, with ample space for rigging and launching. The atmosphere is quite calm, often uncrowded outside of summer, which appeals to riders who enjoy sailing away from the crowd.

Location

Detailed information

The beach is generally oriented west, facing the Atlantic, making it a spot very exposed to swell. The prevailing winds in the region often come from the north to northeast in spring and summer, resulting in a wind that is rather side-shore to side-off from the right at Praia a Rostro, and waves that can quickly exceed 2 to 3 meters on days of large swell. In case of wind from the west, the wind becomes more onshore to side-on, which offers more safety but a more chaotic water surface.

The water surface is clearly oriented towards waves: there are successive bars with sandbanks that shape variable peaks along the beach. At low tide, the shorebreak area can be a bit easier to cross, but the sets sometimes close out across the entire width. At mid-tide and high tide, the waves gain power and the shorebreak becomes more technical, especially for exiting or entering with a large kite.

Launching is done directly from the large sandy beach, with a wide space for takeoff and landing, which is comfortable for preparing equipment. It is best to choose an open area, away from the few exposed rocks indicated by riders, especially towards the ends of the bay. Navigation is mainly done in surfkite or freeride in the waves, staying well upwind of one's comfort zone as the wind can be irregular if the orientation is too side-off.

There are practically no beach users off-season, but in summer, a few bathers and surfers may share the spot, especially near the main access points. It is then wiser to move upwind of the most crowded areas. The absence of direct infrastructure on the beach means that one must arrive self-sufficient in equipment, water, and safety. The atmosphere is very "nature spot", with a sea that is often formed and a wind that can quickly strengthen during low-pressure passages.
