Rostro

The beach of Praia a Rostro, on the wild coast of Galicia near Cape Finisterre, is a large stretch of sand facing directly west towards the Atlantic. The place is surrounded by dunes and vegetation, with very few buildings, giving it a rather isolated atmosphere.

It is a beach known to surfers and kitesurfers for its powerful waves and consistent wind, with ample space for rigging and launching. The atmosphere is quite calm, often uncrowded outside of summer, which appeals to riders who enjoy sailing away from the crowd.

The beach is generally oriented west, facing the Atlantic, making it a spot very exposed to swell. The prevailing winds in the region often come from the north to northeast in spring and summer, resulting in a wind that is rather side-shore to side-off from the right at Praia a Rostro, and waves that can quickly exceed 2 to 3 meters on days of large swell. In case of wind from the west, the wind becomes more onshore to side-on, which offers more safety but a more chaotic water surface.

The water surface is clearly oriented towards waves: there are successive bars with sandbanks that shape variable peaks along the beach. At low tide, the shorebreak area can be a bit easier to cross, but the sets sometimes close out across the entire width. At mid-tide and high tide, the waves gain power and the shorebreak becomes more technical, especially for exiting or entering with a large kite.

Launching is done directly from the large sandy beach, with a wide space for takeoff and landing, which is comfortable for preparing equipment. It is best to choose an open area, away from the few exposed rocks indicated by riders, especially towards the ends of the bay. Navigation is mainly done in surfkite or freeride in the waves, staying well upwind of one's comfort zone as the wind can be irregular if the orientation is too side-off.

There are practically no beach users off-season, but in summer, a few bathers and surfers may share the spot, especially near the main access points. It is then wiser to move upwind of the most crowded areas. The absence of direct infrastructure on the beach means that one must arrive self-sufficient in equipment, water, and safety. The atmosphere is very "nature spot", with a sea that is often formed and a wind that can quickly strengthen during low-pressure passages.

Vent ideal
NW
Ndominant

The ideal conditions for Praia a Rostro occur with a wind from the north or northwest providing a side-shore to side-on angle relative to the beach, with a strength around 18 to 25 knots. In these configurations, the waves remain well utilized while maintaining a good safety margin for returning to shore.

For an intermediate to advanced rider, a small to medium swell combined with consistent wind is the best compromise to enjoy the waves without the spot becoming too challenging. Days of moderate onshore wind can also be interesting for learning surfkite while staying attentive to the shorebreak.

État de la mer

The water surface at Praia a Rostro is clearly oriented towards waves. The beach directly receives the swell from the Atlantic, resulting in regular sets, with wave sizes ranging from small to medium on calm days and solid during large swell events. The waves break over a sandy bottom with banks that create more or less defined peaks, and a shorebreak that can be powerful at high tide.

At low tide, the waves often roll a bit further out, with an interior that can be more manageable for transitions, but the water surface rarely remains flat. There is often a mix of chop and waves between the bars, which requires good control of the kite. On days of small swell and moderate wind, the spot is well-suited for accessible surfkite, while on days of large swell and strong wind, it becomes a challenging playground for big wave enthusiasts.

Courants marins

The currents at Praia a Rostro are mainly related to swell and tide. The Atlantic tidal range can generate noticeable water movements, especially near the ends of the beach where the water drains more quickly. In the central area, the current generally remains moderate, but it can become more pronounced during large swells or spring tides.

On days of strong swell, rip currents can form around sandbanks, with water flowing back out to sea. They are not necessarily visible from the beach, so it is important to stay alert to any unusual lateral movements. Overall, the current is not the most dangerous element of the spot, but it should be taken into account, especially for returning to shore when the wind is side-off or irregular.

Taille de kite recommandée

For a rider weighing 75 to 80 kg, the most commonly used sizes at this spot generally range between 7 m² and 11 m², depending on the season and wind strength. In summer, with winds around 18 to 22 knots, a kite of 9 m² or 10 m² is often ideal. On days of stronger wind, especially in winter or during low-pressure situations, one can easily go down to sizes around 7 m² or 8 m².

Lighter riders can comfortably navigate between 6 m² and 9 m², while heavier riders will typically use 9 m² to 12 m² when the wind is more irregular or slightly below 20 knots.

Météo & vent

Galicia receives a combination of thermal winds in summer and winds related to Atlantic depressions the rest of the year. In spring and summer, a flow from north to northeast often sets in during the afternoon, generating a consistent and generally well-established wind along the coast. At Praia a Rostro, this wind typically arrives side-shore to side-off from the right, with typical strengths around 15 to 25 knots on good days.

In autumn and winter, wind gusts associated with disturbances can bring winds from the west to southwest, sometimes very strong, with a large sea and gusts exceeding 30 knots. These situations are generally reserved for experienced riders, especially in the waves. The spot works almost year-round, but consistency is better between late spring and early autumn.

Climat

The climate in this part of Galicia is oceanic, with mild and humid winters and temperate summers. In summer, air temperatures often hover around 20 to 25 °C in the afternoon, with cooler nights. In winter, highs are generally around 10 to 15 °C, with frequent Atlantic depressions.

Precipitation is fairly regular outside of summer, but showers often give way to beautiful clearings. The best conditions for kitesurfing generally extend from spring to autumn, when thermals and weather systems combine to provide a good wind rate. Winter can be very interesting for waves, but conditions are more challenging and unstable.

Profondeur

The depth is gradual with a completely sandy bottom. You can stand a good distance from the shore, although the presence of strong waves can quickly bring you into deeper water. Sandbanks sometimes create slightly shallower areas offshore, where the waves break first.

It is advisable to scout the sandbank configuration from the beach before entering the water, as they strongly influence the shape of the waves and any potential rip currents. Overall, the absence of rocks in the central area is an advantage, but the power of the shorebreak requires careful management of entries and exits from the water.

Température de l’eau

The water temperature remains relatively cool year-round in Galicia. In the height of summer, the water usually reaches around 18 to 20 °C, allowing for sailing in 3/2 mm or 4/3 mm for those less sensitive to the cold. In spring and autumn, the temperature is generally around 15 to 17 °C, making a 4/3 mm wetsuit with possibly a neoprene shorty on top or a comfortable neoprene top advisable.

In winter, the water temperature can drop to 12 to 14 °C, necessitating a 5/4 mm wetsuit, with booties and possibly gloves and a hood for long sessions. Even in summer, it is almost never possible to sail in just a lycra on this spot.
