Informations utiles
The spot mainly works with north and northeast winds, which come in side-on or side-shore from the left of the beach, offering a flat water surface protected by the ria's configuration. The launch area is easy on the sand, with a spacious take-off zone right on the beach. The riding area extends several hundred meters into the ria, without major obstacles, but you must stay clear of the boat mooring zones.
At high tide, the water surface gains depth and space, making jibes smoother; at low tide, it remains navigable but more technical near the shore. The wind is often thermal in the afternoon during the season, with gusts to watch out for. Local schools like Kite Galicia confirm that this is a regulated kitesurfing spot with an information panel.
Ideal conditions are a northeast side-shore wind at 18-25 kts, stable and thermal, for a smooth and rideable water surface all day long.
The waters are calm, crystal clear, and cold, typical of a sheltered ria without swells. The water surface remains flat even in strong winds due to natural protection.
Currents are generally weak in the ria, influenced by tides that rise and fall by 3-4 meters. Be cautious of boat passage areas where the current can slightly accelerate.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in typical conditions, dropping to 7-9 m² when the wind exceeds 20 kts.
The prevailing wind comes from the north to northeast, often around 15-25 kts in typical sessions, with a current score of 34/100 indicating average conditions. Today, it measures 23.8 kts, but check Windguru for Portomaior-Agrelo for accurate kitesurfing forecasts.
The Galician climate is oceanic, with mild temperatures year-round: around 15-20°C in summer and 10-15°C in winter. The best months for riding are variable, but spring and autumn offer the most reliable winds. Plan to wear a wetsuit even in summer as the water remains cool.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom. You can stand a good distance from the shore, ideal for restarts.
The water is cold: 14-16°C in summer, 11-13°C in winter. A 5/3 wetsuit is mandatory year-round.
