Naxos

Agios Georgios is a wide sandy beach located south of the capital of Naxos. It is a spot known for kitesurfing and windsurfing with centers offering lessons and equipment rental. The atmosphere is lively due to its proximity to the town and its crystal-clear waters.

The beach offers a mix of flat lagoon and more open areas with waves. A reef separates the lagoon where you can stand from the open sea, allowing for varied sessions depending on skill level.

It is a favored spot for riders due to its easy access and reliable wind in summer.

The main wind, the Meltemi, comes from the north and blows mainly in the afternoon, often between 4-5 Bft at first then up to 6-7 Bft during peak sessions, before dropping at sunset. It is a side-on wind relative to the east-facing beach, ideal for upwind riding and jumping. Launching is easy on the wide sandy beach, with a clear take-off area near schools like Flisvos or Thalasea.

The navigation area is divided by a reef that protects a flat lagoon with depth where you can stand, perfect for tricks and cautious beginners. Beyond the reef, there is moderate chop and small waves in open sea, suitable for intermediates and advanced riders. In case of strong wind, be cautious in the outer area where waves can grow. The water remains navigable all day but the best time is in the afternoon when the wind strengthens.

The schools on site facilitate access to the spot, and there is enough space even in high season to ride without too much crowd.

Vent ideal
Ndominant
NEdominant

Ideal conditions are a Meltemi of 15-25 knots from the north in the afternoon, for a lively but manageable water surface in the lagoon or with moderate waves outside.

État de la mer

The water surface offers a good mix between flat in the lagoon and chop with small waves beyond the reef. Conditions remain manageable even in strong winds, ideal for progression.

Courants marins

Currents are generally weak in the lagoon protected by the reef. In open sea, they can intensify with the strong Meltemi, but nothing major to report. Tides have little impact in the Mediterranean, with minimal amplitude.

Taille de kite recommandée

Opt for kite sizes of 7 to 11 m² depending on the strength of the Meltemi, which can pick up quickly. 9-11 m² for calm sessions in early afternoon, and 7-9 m² when it picks up.

Météo & vent

The wind regime is dominated by the Meltemi, a very reliable north wind in summer, particularly in the afternoon. It starts around noon, increases in strength up to 20-30 knots, and decreases in the evening. This is what makes Naxos a top spot in Greece.

Climat

The climate of Naxos is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Temperatures during the kitesurfing season (May to October) hover around 25-30°C during the day. The water remains pleasant at 20-25°C in summer.

Profondeur

In the lagoon, the depth is gradual with a sandy bottom where you can stand for a long time. Beyond the reef, it drops off more quickly into deep water.

Température de l’eau

In summer (June-September), the water is at 22-25°C, a shorty is sufficient for most. In spring and autumn, expect 18-22°C, plan for a thin wetsuit if sessions are long.
