Plaža Maragkas (Plaža Plaka)
Grèce · South Aegean
Maragkas beach, also known as Plaka, is located on the southern coast of Naxos in the Cyclades. It is a long stretch of fine sand bordered by dunes and a few tavernas, about ten minutes by bus from the town of Naxos. The spot attracts windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts due to its consistent winds, although it is more popular with windsurfers.
Further south towards Plaka, there are kitesurfing centers like Amouditis, offering equipment rental and lessons. The beach is family-friendly to the north near Maragas, with umbrellas and bars, but calmer and more suitable for kiting in the southern sections. The atmosphere is relaxed, with a mix of bathers and riders.
Easy access by bus or car, free parking along the unpaved road. Simple accommodations are available nearby, from B&B to small hotels.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The main wind is the Meltemi, blowing from the northwest or north in a side-offshore direction relative to the south-facing beach. Near the coast, the wind is attenuated by trees, buildings, and dunes, so you need to move offshore between Naxos and Paros to catch the real power. The riding area is wide and shallow at first, with a sandy bottom ideal for launching.
For kiting, favor the southern sections of Maragas towards Plaka, which are less crowded. Launching is possible on the wide beach, but be cautious of umbrellas and families to the north. The water is generally flat to choppy near the shore, with potential swell offshore. No reefs, but ride far from the beach to avoid land obstacles and enjoy the best wind.
Plaka is the most reliable spot for all winds, spacious even in high season. Schools like Amouditis offer boat lessons for added safety.
