Informations utiles
The Alyko-Kedros spot is exposed to winds from the north, north-west, and north-north-west, with a perfect side-shore for the dominant Meltemi. The launch and take-off area is medium-sized, on a sandy beach between two rocky bays. The navigation space is flat to choppy, with flat water in the center and moderate chop; small to medium waves form with west or south-west winds. The central area is the safest for launching and landing, avoiding the rocks at the ends of the bays. No tidal influence, the spot always works the same. During sessions, stay in the main bay to avoid drifting towards rocky areas or dunes.
Ideal conditions are with winds N, NW, NNW at 18-25 kts, stable side-shore for a perfect flat-chop water surface. Avoid south winds that generate too many waves at this exposed west spot.
The water surface is typically flat to choppy, with a sandy and shallow bottom at the shore. There are small waves (up to 1m) with west/south-west winds, otherwise flat water in the bays for freestyle or freeride. The water is crystal clear and turquoise, with moderate chop in the middle of the day.
Currents are generally weak to negligible at this protected spot. There are no significant tides in the Cyclades, so no variation related to high or low tide. However, be cautious of a slight offshore current with strong north-west winds.
For typical winds of 15-30 kts, choose sizes between 7 to 11m² depending on your weight and style. 9-11m for light days, 7-9m when it picks up.
The wind regime is dominated by the Meltemi, a reliable thermal wind from the north to north-west averaging 15-30 knots, especially in the afternoon. It blows from May to October, with regular sessions at 20-25 kts in high season. Gusty at times, but generally consistent and onshore to side-shore.
The Mediterranean climate of Naxos offers hot and dry summers, with temperatures around 25-30°C from May to October. Winters are mild but less windy, with lows around 10-15°C. The ideal season extends from May to October, peaking in July-August for the constant Meltemi.
The depth is gradual with a completely sandy bottom. You can stand up to about 50-100m from the shore in the bays, perfect for restarts and beginners.
Water temperatures rise to 22-26°C in summer (June-September), ideal for a shorty. Spring and autumn around 18-22°C, 3/2mm neoprene recommended off-season.
