Punda Kite Beach, located on the west coast of Paros facing Antiparos, is a must-visit kitesurfing spot in the Cyclades. This narrow passage between the two islands creates a venturi effect that boosts the wind, perfect for intense sessions.
The beach is about 1 km long with fine sand and shallow water in the first meters, making it ideal for both beginners and advanced riders. There are several kite schools and a friendly atmosphere with well-equipped centers.
The spot is popular for its consistent conditions and its proximity to Paroikia, just a few kilometers to the south.
The main wind is the northern Meltem, blowing starboard side-shore on the north-south oriented beach. This venturi effect in the 1.7 km strait between Paros and Antiparos strengthens the wind to an average of 12-25 knots, with stronger gusts in strong meltem.
Launching is easy thanks to a wide beach and a flat shallow bottom over 80-100 meters, ideal for rigging and relaunching the kite. The navigation area extends about 600 meters of smooth water, then downwind to Antiparos in a quick ride, in less than 8 minutes for independent riders.
North of Punda, a wider area offers long runs to avoid the crowd in the central lines. In strong wind, you can play in the small waves; in light wind, it's perfect for foiling. Tides have little impact, the water remains flat to light chop most of the time.
Ideal conditions are a northern Meltem at 15-20 knots, perfect side-shore for a smooth water surface and powerful runs. Constant wind without too many gusts for all levels.
The water surface is mostly flat to light chop due to the protection of the strait and the shallow bottom. In strong meltem, small waves form for moderate wave riding.
Currents are generally weak in the main area of the beach. However, be cautious in the narrow channel towards Antiparos where they can accelerate with strong winds.
Tides have a low impact in the Mediterranean, with no significant variation in the water level.
For a rider weighing 70-80 kg, plan for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² in medium wind, dropping to 7-9 m² in strong meltem over 20 knots. Beginners opt for 10-13 m² due to the shallow depth.
The wind regime is dominated by the northern Meltem, a powerful and steady thermal wind in summer, blowing side-shore at 12 to 25 knots. It picks up around noon and weakens in the evening, with consistent conditions thanks to the channel effect between the islands.
In strong meltem, speeds exceed 25 knots for intense freeride sessions; in light meltem, the spot remains rideable for all levels.
The climate of the Cyclades is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers from May to September, and mild but calmer winters. Air temperatures range between 20-30°C in peak season, ideal for riding in a shorty or lycra.
The recommended period is from mid-May to the end of September to combine consistent wind and warm water, avoiding the high season from mid-July to mid-August when the spot is very crowded.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom. You can stand on the first 80-100 meters, perfect for learning and safely relaunching.
In May-June, the water is at 19°C, a 4/3 long wetsuit or shorty is recommended. From mid-July to September, it rises to 24°C for riding in lycra or shorty.
