Plage de Tharon
France · Pays de la Loire
The beach of Tharon, located in Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef in Loire-Atlantique, is a large stretch of fine sand one kilometer long. It offers a family-friendly setting with amenities such as a lifeguard station, showers, and a nearby water sports center.
The northern part is dedicated to water activities such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, or land sailing. It is a well-known spot for riders due to its easy access and relaxed atmosphere outside the summer season.
Backed by a preserved dune cordon, it gives a sense of isolation despite its proximity to the town center of Tharon-Plage.

The spot works well with a side-shore wind from the northwest or west, ideal for a smooth launch on the sand. The navigation area is mainly located to the north of the beach, near the port of Comberge, to avoid the central family area and the south with the fisheries.
At low tide, you can stand for a good distance with a flat sandy bottom, perfect for beginners in freeride. At high tide, the water gains depth but be careful of the shore-break which can complicate take-off and landing.
Launching is done directly from the wide and obstacle-free north beach, with a clear take-off area. In the high season from June to September, respect the markings of the authorized kitesurfing zones and watch for temporary bans related to swimming or fishing.
