Erromardie

The beach of Erromardie, located in Saint-Jean-de-Luz on the Basque coast, is a popular spot for surfing with its waves suitable for beginners and intermediates. Surrounded by an exceptional setting between mountains and ocean, it offers easy access from the authentic town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

It is a calm place with surf schools nearby, ideal for progressing safely. Locals appreciate its relaxed atmosphere and its position at the gates of Spain.

In kitesurfing, it is rarer but possible with a good west wind, in a dedicated area during the season.

Location

Detailed information

The beach of Erromardie faces west, which means the west wind blows onshore or side-on from the right, perfect for a direct launch on the sand. The navigation area is located offshore from the surf waves, avoiding the monitored swimming area in summer from June to September where signs indicate the space reserved for kitesurfing outside monitoring hours.

Launching is easy on the sand at the water's edge, with a spacious takeoff area on the wide beach. Be careful as the water surface becomes choppy with onshore wind, and more agitated by the tides with lateral currents to watch. In low water, rocks are exposed near the reef break, making navigation technical; in deep water, the space opens up better but waves persist.

Local peculiarity: the spot is shared with surfers, so respect the priorities and navigate wide to avoid interference. The wind can be gusty due to nearby reliefs, prefer morning or late sessions in season for more tranquility.
