Bidart

The Uhabia beach, located in Bidart in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a beach break popular with surfers and kiters. It is situated right at the mouth of the Uhabia river, with a pleasant setting between the ocean and the village.

It is a reliable backup spot where good conditions can often be found, especially at low tide and mid-tide. Locals appreciate its accessibility and the free parking nearby.

The southern side sometimes forms good sandy banks for nice waves, while the north hosts a peak near the Embruns.

Location

Detailed information

The Uhabia spot is oriented facing west, making it mainly workable with south to north winds, ideally side-on to side-shore from the southwest or northwest for a clean water surface. South winds are rare but perfect, while the north thermal is often too weak except for foiling. Launching is done directly from the beach, preferably in the north for kite takeoff. The navigation area is wide but rough, especially in winter with the west swell generating significant chop. At high tide, the water covers the exposed rocks, making navigation safer; at low tide, the beach break exposes rocky areas, so avoid getting too close to the shore. The mouth of the river sometimes creates sandbanks to the south, forming a small left-right peak, but the water remains generally rough with shorebreak at high tide on the southern side. In summer, kiting is allowed only from 6am to 10am, and free outside the season from October 1 to May 31. Always check the crowd and do not kite alone, as the spot is shared with surfers and bathers.
