Plage de la Chambre d'Amour
France · Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The Chambre d'Amour beach, located in Anglet in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, lies at the foot of the Cap Saint-Martin cliff and its lighthouse. It is an urban spot popular with surfers for its natural protection against the south wind and its lively atmosphere with nearby bars and restaurants.
Surrounded by the Chambre d'Amour neighborhood, it hosts surf schools like Rainbow and the Anglet Surf Club. The beach is monitored during the season and is labeled Blue Flag, with easy access from Biarritz.
Caves carve the base of the cliff, and the setting remains family-friendly despite the high attendance of local riders.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The Chambre d'Amour beach is oriented west, making it ideal for an onshore or side-on wind coming from WNW or W, typical of the Basque coast. The south wind is mitigated by the cliff which acts as a breakwater, creating a calmer water surface than on the neighboring beaches to the north of Anglet.
Launching is done directly from the fine sand, with a take-off area to the south of the beach to avoid the crowd of surfers. The navigation area extends outward but remains limited by the rocks to the north and nearby jetties; prefer to navigate on the rising tide for more space.
At low tide, the water is chop with small waves due to the protection of the cliff, while at high tide, it becomes more flat but the beach narrows significantly. Sessions are better in side-shore WNW for a smooth ride, with water often choppy due to onshore wind of 15-25 km/h. Be cautious of numerous bathers and surfers in season; kite schools are rare here, prefer the outer areas.
