Anglet

The Cavaliers beach in Anglet, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a legendary surf spot on the Basque coast, known for its powerful tubular waves. Located north of Anglet, it attracts pro competitions and experienced surfers year-round. Although primarily dedicated to surfing, it offers a lively setting with easy parking and a typical coastal atmosphere.

For kitesurfing, it's more complicated as the beach is crowded with bathers and surfers, especially in summer. Wind conditions are often good but navigation remains limited by the crowd and local rules. It's a spot to watch for calm slots off-season.

Location

Detailed information

The Cavaliers beach is oriented west, exposed to Atlantic swells, which gives a choppy water surface with regular waves. For kitesurfing, the side-on or side-shore wind ideally comes from the northeast or east, protecting the waves and creating a ridden but navigable water surface. The onshore wind from the northwest is common but makes launching technical due to the waves.

The navigation area is located offshore from the surf peaks (Cavaliers, Dunes, Barre), with launching between the swimming flags when allowed. At low tide and mid-tide, the spot is most exploitable for kiting as the sand shows and the waves calm down a bit. Avoid the launching area near surfers; prefer the northern or southern ends if possible. In summer, check the supervised swimming times when kiting is prohibited on Anglet beaches.

Particularities: the spot handles large swells well without saturating, but the intense traffic (surfers, body surfers) requires maximum vigilance. The wind can pick up quickly in the afternoon thermal, ideal for dynamic sessions but risky for beginners.
