Len Fox Park is a quiet spot in Labrador on the Gold Coast, with a view of the Broadwater. There is a nice grassy area to prepare the gear and a beach for launching, just north of the Mitchell Park boat ramp.
It is a popular place for kiters due to its flat and shallow water, perfect for beginners who want to progress safely. The park is family-friendly with barbecues, playgrounds, and outdoor showers.
Kiting takes place in the Broadwater, protected from waves, with sandbanks that further calm the water.
The spot works well with N, NE, E, SE winds, which are side-shore to side-on relative to the east-facing beach. A south wind creates a dead zone due to trees and buildings, making the spot unusable – better to go to Shearwater Esplanade.
Launching is done directly from the narrow beach, with a grassy launch area ideal for rigging. At high tide, the beach narrows and assisted launching may be necessary at the water's edge. The water is shallow with sandbanks that become exposed at low tide, protecting from the tidal current and creating a super flat water surface when wind and tide align.
The navigation area is the Broadwater, wide enough to turn without issues, but stay away from yachts to the north and boat traffic. Beginners stay close to the shore where you can stand for a long time, intermediates can freeride on the flat.
Ideal conditions are NE to SE winds of 15-25 knots, side-shore, for perfect flat water and clean wind. N and NE also work well for long sessions.
The water is generally flat thanks to the protection of the Broadwater, with a sandy bottom and banks that calm everything. At low tide, some banks become exposed, ideal for flat water; at high tide, it remains smooth without waves.
The tidal current in the Broadwater is moderate, mitigated by the sandbanks. It remains weak near the spot but can accelerate in the channels – stay alert during tide changes.
Opt for 9 to 12m² sizes in typical 15-20 knot conditions. Beginners should take 11-13m² for the shallow and flat areas.
The dominant thermal winds come from the NE to SE in the warm season, with regular sessions of 15-25 knots. The pattern is variable, but the best months often align N/NE/E/SE for consistent flat conditions. Avoid pure south winds as they do not work.
The subtropical climate of the Gold Coast offers pleasant temperatures year-round. In summer (December-March), air temperatures reach 30-35°C and water temperatures reach 28°C. In winter (June-August), expect 18-28°C in the air and 18-23°C in the water, always kiteable without a full suit.
L'eau est peu profonde avec un fond sableux, on a pied jusqu'à 50-100m du bord selon la marée. Des bancs de sable affleurent à basse mer.
In summer, the water reaches 28°C, a shorty is sufficient. In winter, it drops to 18-23°C, so plan for a 3/2 suit.
