Riumar

Playa Riumar, at the entrance of the Ebro Delta in Catalonia, is a popular spot for its large sandy beach and simple atmosphere, focused on sliding sports. It is a well-known place for locals for kitesurfing, wingfoiling, and windsurfing.

The spot mainly works when the winds from the north to northwest set in, with good sessions also possible when the flow turns to the east or northeast. There are several very shallow water areas near the mouth, making it an interesting terrain for progressing or safely navigating depending on the conditions.

Location

Detailed information

Playa Riumar is a wide beach spot with easy launch on sand, without major obstacles at the edge. According to web sources and local feedback, the spot mainly works with North, North-West, North-East, and East winds, which often gives a sideshore to side-onshore wind depending on the exact orientation of the flow. In practice, the spot is particularly interesting in the cold period, when thermals are less present and synoptic flows take over.

The water surface varies depending on the chosen area. Offshore from the beach, one can have a flat to slightly choppy water surface, with sometimes small waves if the wind strengthens. In the lagoons near the mouth, the water is often very flat and shallow in places, making it a good area for freeride, light foiling, and learning, provided one properly identifies the sandbanks and shallower areas.

Navigation is generally done while keeping a good reading of the bottom, as some areas quickly become very shallow. Launching is done directly from the beach, with sufficient space to rig and take off, but one must remain attentive to other riders, walkers, and the evolution of the sandbanks. It is a more comfortable spot when the wind is clean, well established, and not too irregular. In summer, activity can be more local and attendance higher, while in winter the conditions are often more suitable for kitesurfing.

Risks & Safety

  • The spot has very shallow areas near the lagoons and the mouth, with a risk of grounding on the sandbanks.

  • The wind can be gusty with tramontane episodes, which requires keeping some margin in the choice of kite size.

  • One must be careful of the current and narrow passages near the delta, especially when moving away from the launch area.
