Risco del Paso is a legendary kitesurfing spot located in the south of Fuerteventura, seven kilometers south of Costa Calma, on the long beach of Sotavento. It is the entrance to the famous lagoon where the tides create ideal conditions for all levels, with a large white sandy beach and schools like ION CLUB on site.
The surrounding hills channel the wind to make it stronger and more consistent, especially in summer. Kiters share the space with windsurfers without issue thanks to the immense stretch of beach, which offers dedicated areas for kitesurfing.
Whether you are a beginner looking for shallow water or an advanced rider wanting gentle waves, this versatile spot welcomes everyone in a natural and windy atmosphere.
The wind generally comes offshore with a bit of side from the northeast or east, channeled by the surrounding mountains that create a funnel effect enhancing its strength. This is perfect for stable navigation, but be careful if the wind turns too pure offshore as you can drift out to sea.
The water surface varies greatly with the tides: at high tide, the lagoon fills with flat and shallow water ideal for beginners and controlled jumps; at low tide, natural pools form in front of the school for lessons, while the intermediate area offers space for jibes and gybes. Launching is easy on the 6 km sandy beach, with a large take-off area to the north near the centers.
Separate areas for kitesurfing to the left of the school, away from windsurfers; advanced riders can go towards the gentle waves (max 2m) upwind of the center on a sandy bottom. Always check the tides before coming as the lagoon can be empty on some days.
Ideal in 20-30 knots offshore-side from NE or E, to enjoy the flat lagoon without the risk of excessive drift. Perfect when the schools are open for rescue.
Water surface is generally flat to light chop in the lagoon, perfect for freestyle and jumps. Offshore, gentle waves form with strong wind, on a safe sandy bottom.
The currents are weak in the lagoon thanks to the bottom closed by the dunes, making the place safe for learning. However, be careful in the entry-exit areas of the water at changing tides where the flow can accelerate slightly.
Significant tides: check the tables to avoid days without water.
In high season, kites of 5 to 9 m² are sufficient given the wind strength; off-season, go up to 11-12 m². Adjust according to your weight and level.
The wind regime is very reliable thanks to the effect of the reliefs, with an average of 20-30 knots from May to September, the best period. Possible all year round, especially March to August, with dominant directions NE and E offshore-side.
Stronger and more consistent than elsewhere on the island, even when the rest of Fuerteventura is calm, this spot delivers.
Fuerteventura enjoys a dry subtropical climate with wind all year round and pleasant temperatures. In summer, it is 24-30°C and it is the windy high season; in winter, around 18-22°C with less strength but still rideable.
Little rain, plenty of sunshine, perfect for long uninterrupted sessions.
The lagoon offers a progressive and shallow depth, often foot deep for several hundred meters from the shore, with a mostly sandy bottom. Ideal for beginners and water relaunch.
In summer, the water is 22-24°C, a shorty or lycra is enough; in winter, 18-20°C, plan for a 3/2 for comfort.
