The Playa Dorada beach in Playa Blanca, in the south of Lanzarote, is an artificial beach protected by a breakwater. It offers fine golden sand and calm waters with a view of Fuerteventura. It is a popular spot for families due to its tranquility and easy access from Marina Rubicón.
The spot is located near the lively village of Playa Blanca, with its restaurants and shops. Despite its touristy atmosphere, it sometimes attracts kiters when the wind is well established from the northeast. Access is easy by car from Arrecife airport via the LZ2.
The beach is wide and protected from the prevailing winds, making it a relaxing spot outside of strong wind sessions.
The spot mainly works with NE wind, which comes offshore relative to the south-facing beach. This orientation creates a flat to chop water surface in the bay protected by the breakwater, ideal for freeride navigation or first light wave sessions. Launching is done directly from the fine sand at the center of the beach, with a good take-off area near Marina Rubicón where a ramp facilitates access.
The navigation area is bounded by the breakwater to the east and rocks to the west, about 300 meters wide. Be cautious of the many swimmers in high season, it is important to stay vigilant and navigate wide. Tides have little impact here due to the protection, but in open sea the water space increases. Gusts are common with the trade winds, making the spot technical even for intermediates.
Local feature: the NE trade wind is constant but gusty, perfect for strapless or foil in shallow water. Avoid windless days when the beach is crowded with families.
Ideal conditions are a NE 18-25 knots wind, stable in strength and offshore for a mirror-like water surface. Avoid SW winds which make the spot onshore and unmanageable.
The water state is generally flat to chop with NE offshore wind. On busy days, the chop increases slightly due to boating traffic. The waters remain clear and shallow, perfect for freestyle or foil.
The currents are weak in the bay thanks to the protective breakwater. The Atlantic tides have a low amplitude, around 1-2 meters, with no major impact on navigation. Stay clear of the marina channel where the current can accelerate.
Opt for sizes between 9 and 12 m² in moderate NE wind. Go larger 11-14 m² on light days, and 7-9 m² in strong sessions.
The wind regime is dominated by NE trade winds, blowing regularly between 15 and 25 knots in the afternoon. This trade wind is predictable but often gusty near the coast. Ideal conditions set in from spring to autumn, with sessions possible year-round.
The climate in Playa Blanca is mild year-round with average temperatures between 18°C in winter and 28°C in summer. The best months for kiting are all, from January to December, thanks to the almost constant sun and little rain. It is a reliable destination for sessions in a shorty or lycra.
The depth is gradual with a sandy bottom. You can stand up to about 50-100 meters from the shore, perfect for relaunches.
Water temperatures range from 18-20°C in winter to 22-24°C in summer. A 3/2 shorty is suitable year-round.
