Kijkduin - Strand Kijkduin
Netherlands
Kijkduin
Strand Kijkduin stretches along the Dutch coast, just southwest of The Hague. This spot is known for the Zandmotor, a huge sand extension in the North Sea that creates shallow lagoons ideal for kiting.
On the ocean side, there is chop and small waves to vary the sessions. It's a versatile spot, accessible from the sandy beach, with a friendly atmosphere favored by locals and kite schools in the area.
The spot works well year-round, especially with the regular west winds, and offers a good mix between flat water and more dynamic conditions just a few meters away.

Informations utiles
The Strand Kijkduin spot is oriented west, perfect for westerly and southwesterly winds that blow side-on or side-shore from the sea. With the Zandmotor, flat water lagoons form near the shore, ideal for beginners and freestyle, while the open ocean just next to it offers chop and small waves for the more experienced.
Launching is done on a wide sandy beach, with a spacious and obstacle-free take-off area. The navigation area is marked, but wide thanks to the Zandmotor; stay in the indicated kitezones to avoid swimmers. At low tide, the lagoons partially dry out and become technical, while at high tide, everything is smoother with more space.
Freeride, freestyle, hydrofoil, and even wave sessions are possible depending on the conditions. The wind often picks up in the afternoon, and the spot works with almost all directions thanks to the sheltered lagoons.
Ideal conditions are with a wind of 15-25 knots from the west or southwest, side-on, for clean water in the lagoons and punch in the ocean.
The water state varies: flat water in the Zandmotor lagoons, chop and small to medium waves on the ocean side. The beach is exposed, with moderate branding and sometimes groundswells from the northwest.
Best conditions at low tide for surfing, but for kiting, high tide offers more depth.
Currents are present due to the proximity of the ocean, with possible dangerous rips near the pier and in the Zandmotor channels. Tides strongly influence: at low tide, the lagoons empty and currents accelerate locally.
Beware of unexpected deep areas in the Zandmotor lakes.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12 m² in medium wind, 7-9 m² when it blows 20+ knots, and up to 13-15 m² for light days or foils.
The prevailing winds are westerlies, from northwest to southwest, with typical strengths of 15 to 25 knots. They are frontal and most consistent in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), often picking up in the middle of the day or afternoon.
The regime is reliable due to the exposed position on the west coast, with little thermal but plenty of Atlantic depressions.
The climate at Kijkduin is oceanic, with mild temperatures year-round: around 15-20°C in summer and 5-10°C in winter. Spring and autumn are the windiest seasons, while summer can be calmer and sunnier.
From September to December, the weather is often cloudy and rainy, but this is when the wind is most reliable.
The depth is shallow and sandy in the lagoons, with foot for a long time near the shore. On the ocean side, it gradually drops, but deep holes exist in the Zandmotor.
The water temperature ranges from 8-12°C in winter to 18-20°C in summer. A long neo is recommended year-round.
