Brouwersdam is an iconic spot in South Holland, on the North Sea coast. This place attracts kitesurfers from all over the world thanks to its vast sandy beach that stretches for several kilometers.
The spot is shared between kitesurfing, buggy, and kitesurf schools, with free parking and nice beach bars to relax after the session. It's a lively place but with enough space for everyone, perfect for a full day by the water.
The kite area is clearly marked in the North Sea, far from the Grevelingen lagoon which is off-limits for kiting.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The dominant wind comes from SW, W, NW, which provides a perfect side-on or side-shore for the north-facing beach. The launch is on a mega-wide beach, easy even for beginners, with plenty of space to take off and land the kite safely.
At low tide, the water is super flat and shallow for about a hundred meters, ideal for freestyle or learning. At high tide, it transitions to chop and small waves of 1-2m, perfect for wave riding with marked current on the rise. The navigation area is vast, but respect the yellow buoys to the north that mark the swimmer zone.
There is a dedicated foil area to the south, directly deep, to be avoided with a twintip. Schools are on-site to assist with launching, and the spot works well with strong tide for an exceptional flat.
The ideal conditions are with wind SW to NW, 15-25 kts, side-on for a clean water surface. Prefer low tide for perfect flat or high tide for fun waves.
At low tide, flat and shallow for 100m, mirror-like in strong currents. At high tide, chop and small waves of 1-2m that do not break, comfortable for cruising. Near the shore, there are sometimes short mini-breaking waves to manage during launch.
The current is strong at high tide on the rise, especially in strong currents, so you need to manage your position well. At low tide, it's calm in the shallow area. Tides are significant, with a proper tidal range that completely changes the spot.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12m² in medium wind, 7-9m² when it picks up, and 12-14m² for light wind. Adjust according to your weight and whether you prefer waves or flat.
The winds are frontal and thermal, with an average strength of 15-25 kts on good days. The prevailing winds come mainly from the Southwest to Northwest, side-shore ideal for the spot. In summer, thermals stabilize the wind in the afternoon.
The climate is oceanic with reliable winds year-round, more than 50% of kitable days. The best months are from April to October, with mild summer temperatures around 20°C and more sunshine than anywhere else in the Netherlands.
Mild but cool winter, around 5-10°C, with regular frontal winds.
The bottom is sandy with some shells, soft on the beach but hard at the water's edge. Shallow up to 100m at low tide, you can stand for a long time, perfect for beginners.
In summer June-September, the water is at 18-22°C. Spring and autumn around 12-16°C. Winter 6-10°C, 5/3mm wetsuit required.
