The riding area is marked between markers 75.500 and 75.250, to the left of the beach access, about 500 meters wide. The water entry is directly from the fine sand without obstacles, with plenty of space to launch and land the kite. The dominant side-shore winds come from NW, W, SW, creating a choppy to wavy water surface depending on the tide and wind strength.
At low tide, the water is more choppy with short waves, ideal for wave but technical for beginners; at high tide, the water surface calms down a bit but remains influenced by the swell from the North Sea. The best sessions are with consistent northwest wind, side-on from the north-south oriented beach, allowing for smooth jibes without too strong onshore. Be careful to stay in the zone to avoid other regulated beaches.
No supervision on site, so self-discipline is mandatory; webcam available to check conditions live.
Ideal conditions with winds 15-25 kts from N, NNE, SSW, SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW, NNW, side-shore to side-off for a clean and manageable water surface. Optimal score around 49/100 as currently with 22.9 kts.
Water surface of ocean type with average waves of 1-1.5 m, chop in onshore wind, cleaner in side-shore NW. The bottom drops off quickly, no standing after a few meters.
Currents are strong and multidirectional in the North Sea, influenced by moderately sized semi-diurnal tides. Beware of strong currents near the area, especially at low tide or with wind against the current. Stay vigilant when returning to the beach.
For typical winds of 15-25 kts, choose sizes 9 to 12 m² for freeride, smaller 7-9 m² for strong wave. Adjust according to weight and level.
The wind regime is dominated by Atlantic depressions, with regular sessions at 20-30 kts in NW and W winds, constant side-shore making the spot reliable. Directions N, NNE, SSW to NNW work well, offshore to side-off from the north, onshore from the southwest but manageable. Typical strength 15-25 kts in winter season.
The coastal climate of Noordwijk is temperate oceanic, with mild and rainy winters, cool summers. The best months for kitesurfing are January, February, March, April, and December, when the winds are most consistent and strong. Air temperatures range from 5-10°C in winter to 15-20°C in summer.
The depth is quick with a sandy bottom, deep water just a few meters from the shore. No standing area, direct entry into deep water.
Cold water temperatures: 5-8°C in winter (Jan-Mar), 10-14°C in spring/autumn, 16-18°C in summer. Full wetsuit required year-round.
